A senior Russian diplomat signaled a possible shift Wednesday in Russia's position on the ongoing Iranian nuclear talks amid tensions with the United States and other Western countries, according to The Associated Press.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov was quoted by the Russian news organization Interfax as saying the recent sanctions announced by the European Union and U.S. may force Russia to retaliate by altering its stance on the Iran talks. Such a move would dramatically escalate tensions between Russia and the West, which are already high amid Russia's annexation of Crimea on Tuesday.
"We wouldn't like to use these talks as an element of the game of raising the stakes taking into account the sentiments in some European capitals, Brussels and Washington," said Ryabkov, who is Russia's envoy to the ongoing Iran talks.
"But if they force us into that, we will take retaliatory measures here as well. The historic importance of what happened in the last weeks and days regarding the restoration of historical justice and reunification of Crimea with Russia is incomparable to what we are dealing with in the Iranian issue."
This brings up the possibility of colliding two of the most sensitive geopolitical issues of President Barack Obama's second term. Thus far, Russia and President Vladimir Putin have cooperated with the West on the Iran talks.
The move would put Obama in a corner. He wants a permanent deal with Iran — so much so he has threatened to veto any congressional bill that could collapse the talks. He also needs Putin and Russia as his ally in the talks, along with a variety of high-profile foreign policy issues like in Syria and Afghanistan. Together, this reduces the U.S.'s overall leverage in slapping any harsh sanctions or other measures on Russia

The article is wrong. Russian has not cooperated on Iran. Russia is the source and the supplier for Iran’s nuclear program. The fate of hundreds of thousands of lives, if not more, by this reckless Putin policy, and Obama has acquiesced. Now, Putin plays the issue as if he has been restrained. Unbelievable.

You need to understand neo-Eurasianism, which seems to be, more or less, the guiding philosophy behind what we’re seeing now.
As an example:
The book (The Foundations of Geopolitics) stresses the “continental Russian-Islamic alliance” which lies “at the foundation of anti-Atlanticist strategy”. The alliance is based on the “traditional character of Russian and Islamic civilization”.
Iran is a key ally. The book uses the term “Moscow-Tehran axis”.
Armenia has a special role and will serve as a “strategic base” and it is necessary to create “the [subsidiary] axis Moscow-Erevan-Teheran”. Armenians “are an Aryan people ... [like] the Iranians and the Kurds”.
Azerbaijan could be “split up” or given to Iran.
Georgia should be dismembered. Abkhazia and “United Ossetia” (which includes Georgia’s South Ossetia) will be incorporated into Russia. Georgia’s independent policies are unacceptable.

‘The Foundations of Geopolitics: The Geopolitical Future of Russia’ is a geopolitical book by Alexander Dugin. The book has had a large influence within the Russian military, police, and statist foreign policy elites and is used as a textbook in the General Staff Academy of Russian military.
I seriously believe that Dugin’s ideas - and those of the neo-Eurasianists - are the guiding ideology of Russia.

I have to ask why would the Russians want to ally with the second most backwards people on the planet?
My grandmother , a german, used to give her husband periodic hell and in that scolding it was punctuated with “thinking like that you sill always be a stupid Russian”.
I’m thinking, in retrospect, she knew far more than she let on!
But remember, what you and I would refer to as ‘backwardness’ is what neo-Eurasianists consider ‘traditionalism’.
Rigidly hierarchial, ruthlessly conformist, and highly patriarchal cultures; this is what neo-Eurasianists are advocating. For them, Islamic culture is the perfect partner, and what’s more, it is also anti-Western, anti-democratic and anti-liberal.
It’s like peanut butter and jelly. The neo-Eurasianist philosophy can work quite nicely with their Islamic counterparts; they’re really not all that different. In neo-Eurasianism, religion is simply a means of exercising social control over the population - nothing more.
It’s all about global geopolitical power. That is - as it’s always been - the name of the game.
