I thought Inmarsat was only capable of judging distance from the satellite to the airplane, not direction to the plane. That's why they put out that map with wide arcs, instead of nice little points.
IMO this is all total BS. General McInerney has probably been told by high level sources that this plane is in Pakistan or Iran. They have known this all along and are just not sharing.

Last night we were told he had a number of islands programmed into the simulator. Could by just playing with the program or he could have been serious. Will have to check all of them out.
It does not surprise me. Any pilot that flys international routes over water would just for the hell of it see if he could land in an emergency on an unfamiliar airport. He might have been testing himself to see if he could put a 777 down on a 1,000 meter (little over 3,000’ runway)which would be an amazing feat. One he could land on but never take off from.
