MOSCOW, March 20 (RIA Novosti) – Making Ukraine a federal state is the only way to stabilize situation in the country, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Thursday.
“We want to understand, who exactly will represent legitimate authorities in Kiev. In this regard we have a proposal: first of all, a constitutional reform should be held, so that interests of all Ukrainian citizens and regions are respected. This is the only basis for forming legitimate authorities, legislative and executive, central and regional,” Lavrov told members of the lower chamber of the Russian parliament.
“And we are convinced that the situation in the country can be stabilized only through making Ukraine a federal state,” he continued.

I can’t say I disagree that Federalism would help, but then they must do a better job than us in respecting their individual states’ rights and protect from central federalism.
How will the Putinistas spin this demand? Legitimate sphere of influence? Striking out against the neo Nazis? Protecting Russian speakers? Historically Ukraine is a part of Russia?
To me this is a case of naked aggression against people who want their freedom from corruption and Russian domination. Next up is Estonia.

Then you are just spouting off online. This is now a long-game like eastern Europe 1945-1991. This isnt going to be “won” with anyone we have now. The people that will outsmart the Ruskies this time are currently in high school.

Unless someone confronts Putin with some meaningful costs to his aggression, he’s going to end up in charge. We can put anti missile installations in Poland, Turkey, etc. and stop degrading our military, building it up instead. We can have joint military exercises with allies in the area. Putin can gain economically from his conquests as now the sanctions are laughable. Why can’t we supply fuels to Europe?
As things now stand, the human costs to non Russians will be extreme. You can go back to your hero worship of the strongman and wish we had someone like him. Most Americans don’t give a damn about our Constitution as it seem to limit a strong leader (as was intended).
Remaining part of Ukraine was not a ballot option. Which means Russia is either misdirecting us or changed it’s position from total acquisition.
