The Internal Revenue Services watchdog warned taxpayers Thursday about a sophisticated nationwide phone scheme that it said is the largest scam of its kind it has seen.
The scheme involves callers claiming to represent the IRS and demanding immediate payments with a prepaid debit card or wire transfer, the watchdog said.
Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration Russell George said that thousands of victims have paid more than $1 million to fraudsters and that his agency has received more than 20,000 reports of contact.

The real IRS knocks on your door?
They send a letter via USPS asking you to contact them...
Right you are, one knocked on my door, fortunately he was looking for someone else!
Idiot suckers just ripe for picking.
It’s sad with all the info available these days that people can’t educate themselves a little.
If the IRS hadn’t sought to become the most feared federal agency, people might not be so eager to do anything to stay out of its crosshairs.
Was thinking the same thing! I have to imagine that stating "I didn't believe the caller claiming to represent the IRS" or "I didn't believe the email claiming to be from the IRS" is an affirmative defense in a court of law. With all of the scams going around, if the government wants to contact me, they better show up at my door with badges and guns or I'm going to hang up on them and delete every email from them until they convince me otherwise.
The IRS has plenty of knowledge about scaming.
The IRS has plenty of knowledge about scamming.
You can say that again.
Much of this is caused by the dumbing down of the American populace.
People today just aren’t as smart as they used to be.
Too many government indoctrination centers (public schools).
Too many video games.
Too much mindless drivel on TV.
Spell check stutter.
Competitors will be dealt with...
That’s because knowledge isn’t valued like it used to be. Stupid is cool.
My parents were from the WWII generation. They believed EVERY government employee could do anything they wanted to do. If someone called them and told them they were from the IRS and they needed to send some money, my parents would have sent the money.
Let us pray the day soon arrives when cool, rational patriots realize how truly stupid and harmful that is.
