Kenyan polygamy law: Female MPs storm out of parliament
BBC ^ | March 21, 2014 | Unattributed

Female MPs in Kenya have stormed out of a late-night parliamentary session in a row over the legalisation of polygamy.

The law is intended to bring civil law, where a man is only allowed one wife, into line with customary law, where some cultures allow multiple partners.

But male MPs voted to amend the new marriage bill to allow men to take as many wives as they like without consulting existing spouses.

Traditionally, first wives are supposed to give prior approval.

The women walked out in disgust over the matter.

'This is Africa'

MP Samuel Chepkong'a, who proposed the amendment, said that when a woman got married under customary law, she understood that the marriage was open to polygamy, so no consultation was necessary, Kenya's Daily Nation newspaper reports.

Mohammed Junet, an MP representing a constituency from the western Nyanza province, agreed.

"When you marry an African woman, she must know the second one is on the way and a third wife… this is Africa," Kenya's Capital News website quotes him as saying.

Plans to ban the payment of bride prices were dropped - although a person must be 18 to marry and this will apply to all cultures.

Proposals to ensure equal property and inheritance rights were also watered down - a woman will be entitled to 30% of matrimonial property after death or divorce.

Kenya's marriage bill: Specifies that marriage is between a man and a woman, but does not explicitly ban custom of an infertile woman marrying a younger woman.

Africa is a hellhole.

Pretty soon, we'll have little room to talk.

You supplied dead links and I had to go and find them through Wayback Archives, I located the articles you used in your comment, I followed the headlines to the sources, I posted excerpts, I identified where they came from and showed the links, and you haven’t woken up yet that what you used as some sort of ‘African/Kenyan’ confirmation of your assertions CAME FROM BIOGRAPHIES written by US authors?

And I’m out of date? LOL!

You’ve now shown TWO book reviews of the same book from two different sources.

Book review: ‘The Other Barack’ by Sally H. Jacobs

First you said it all came from Dreams. Then you said it all came from Sally Jacobs. I’m saying the writers and editors of the largest and second largest Kenyan papers use many sources. I’m also saying they’re not as dumb as sacks of hammers. They are capable of using multiple sources. They are able to evaluate their sources. Being not merely in Kenya, but actually in Nairobi, they are in a WAY better position than you to fact check the sources they use.

They all agree David Ndesandjo was a real person. No, Fred, you are not a greater authority than all the writers and all the editors, not only of these two newspapers but of many more, that all agree David is Mark’s younger brother. Many of these writers actually went to Nairobi. They interviewed people who knew the Ndesandjos. They did more than internet research. And their conclusion is unanimous.

And so is Mark’s. & if you were just a shade more circumspect, you’d realize Mark is in a better position to know if he had a brother named David than you are.

You quoted this website which I had to find in the archives:

http://web.archive.org/save/http://www.nation.co.ke/News/-/1056/896442/-/vsglbc/-/index.html

When I entered ‘NDESANDJO’ into search, one of the articles listed was the following:

30/7/2011
How Obama father’s dream was ruined
Ruth tried half-heartedly to turn him away. But Obama charmed her with an onslaught of entreaties. He loved her to the core of his being. He adored their son and had yearned for them every day they...

I then entered ‘How Obama father’s dream was ruined’ into Google Search:

And that provided the article on AllAfrica com, which showed the review of SALLY JACOBS BOOK.

But you’ll have to subscribe to read more of that review.

Do you follow? YOU quoted THE PUBLICATION. I looked for, and found the article itself.

Now I must attend to my errand.

If you follow this, please set your buddy straight, I’m giving up. She quotes from a book review and attributes that to some sort of purely Kenyan sourced knowledge. I give up. I’ve posted about as much as I can in an effort to explain.

Fred, you are the master of triviality. I found all three of the articles before you did. I read them all. Now you want some kind of badge/trophy for finding them after I found them originally.

If you got a big shiny medal, what difference would it make? You still haven’t been to Nairobi. You still haven’t interviewed a single person who knew the Ndesandjos. You haven’t interviewed a single Ndesandjo. You haven’t looked at any of the local records. You are a continent away, claiming to know more than those who have worn the leather off the soles of their shoes doing actual research.

Well you don’t. You have a crazy theory that is dead wrong. And that’s really all you have.

Well, you also have snark. But I wouldn’t brag on that. It’s overrated.

Obama Snr died in a car crash in 1982, and in 1987, his son David was killed in a motorcycle accident in Nairobi. Mark now lives in Hong Kong, adopting his Tanzanian stepfather’s name Ndesandjo.=============

and that is confirmation of nothing other than what is written in ‘Dreams’

Are you sure you’re not racist? It sounds like you are giving these African newspaper men/women about as much credit as third grade children, copying lines off a white board.

Now you tell me why two of your links don’t work? I suggest you discuss it all with Seizethecarp. You might have read them all, but dead links aren’t much use in a discussion.

You are the new Johnny Cochran:

If the links are dead
The point goes to Fred.

Hint: whether the links work or not has zero bearing on the central questions.

(1) How much time have you, Fred, spent in Nairobi, interviewing people who knew the Ndesandjos and their son David?

(2) How much time have the people spent whose conclusion you reject out of hand?

(3) Who’s in a better position to know whether he had a brother named David, Mark or you?

Sweetheart, those ‘african newspapers’ are quoting directly from BIOGRAPHIES written by US authors, which is clearly acknowledged.
Now I’m thinking that maybe you thought that dead links would serve you well. Sorry. That didn’t work. And the third one was pathetic. Two lines straight out of the myth.

Charges of rascism are like water off a duck’s back to an Australian, accuse me all you like. All you want to do now is deflect from your (deliberate?) mistake. No Sale.

No wonder your ‘theory’ is such a convoluted mess. You not only can’t see the forest; you can’t even see the trees.

Now once again, this time, one question at a time.

How long were you in Nairobi?

How many people who knew the Ndesandjos did you interview?

How many people connected to David’s life did you interview?

‘Sweetheart, those ‘african newspapers’ are quoting directly from BIOGRAPHIES’

Btw. That is a very creepy use of the term ‘sweetheart’. Very creepy.

I also posted the link to the second story.

Thanks, WH57. Your info is helpful and interesting. My links worked for me the first time I tried them. I don’t know what might have happened in the interim. It didn’t strike me as crucial, however. I’ve seen other posters notified that their links didn’t work. I have never, however, in 14 yrs on FR, seen such as fuss as was made last night. It was bizarre. I still don’t know why such a huge deal was made out of it. It was just...strange.

I don’t think anyone posted the excerpts from The Standard:

‘The Obamas: Barack Obama Snr lived in house No 118 with his white American wife Ruth, whom he married after divorcing Ann Dunham, the US president’s mother in 1964. The Obamas lived with the two eldest children from Keziah, Obama Snr’s first wife. These were Roy and Rita. Ruth’s two younger sons by Obama Snr, Mark Okoth and David Opiyo also lived in House No 118.

...

Obama Snr died in a car crash in 1982, and in 1987, his son David was killed in a motorcycle accident in Nairobi.’

(Heaven help me if this link doesn’t work. The fallout will be ginormous.)
