College students and others at George Mason University were dumbstruck by the tedious nature of an elementary level Common Core problem during a short series of interviews conducted by Campus Reform last week. The problem, 32-12, was demonstrated to those on campus the traditional way and juxtaposed with the Common Core method.

I go to the hardware store to buy something that is $12. I have a $10 and a $20 bill, so I give the person at the checkout counter $30. This person now has to make change.
*****************************
Why the hell would you give more than the $20?

Your explanation of CC math is severely flawed.

Its purpose is to do to math what Whole Language did to reading.

They probably use multiplication to divide, first we turn all these numbers into fractions class and then...

"I don’t get any of it ..."

I think they're trying to get the answer by adding up the difference between 12 and 32 in incremental steps. So the starting number is 12, and they add 3 to get 15. Then they add 5 to 15, to get 20. Then they add 10 to 20 to get 30. Then they add 2 to 30, to get 32, the ending number. Then they add all the individual results (3+5+10+2) to get 20. It seems very arbitrary.

It seems very arbitrary ...

I get it now - teachers are so effin' lazy not to be teaching the concepts that are the foundation of mathematics. + - * /

My daughter is now having to deal with this crap with my grandson. It seems almost demonic, as if it’s deliberately designed to confuse and frustrate children.

Excuse me. If I’m working the counter and someone hands me a 10 and a 20 for a 12 purchase I grab the 20 and give them 8. I never touch the 10.

Your example does not work.

If the customer says he really wants to give me a 10 and a 20 for a 12 purchase because he is a common core lover, I point him to the sign that says we reserve the right to refuse service to idiots and kick them out of the store.

I taught a teenager long division a few years ago. She showed me how she was taught to do division and I was dumb founded. I majored in math and I had not the slightest idea of how she was supposed to divide. It took me two hours of pounding into her head how to do long division. While I was teaching her I realized she could not do multiplication. If you can’t multiply division is really hard. And she was an honor student! Can’t do 6th grade math and you’re an honor student in 11th grade? WTF!

Ask an Honors Student to calculate a square root. When he/she pulls out their electronic calculator, take it away and tell them to do it by hand. Then, watch them sh*t their pants ...

The good news for me is it don’t matter how they try and teach my grandson math. I couldn’t help teach him math past addition and subtraction. I fail when it gets to the level of fractions.

Your grandmother is good at math, ask her.

In fact, I think I’d just tell him to fail the class if he is having trouble with it and focus on a subject he likes.
