APACHE JUNCTION, AZ - Authorities say a homeowner in Apache Junction shot a suspect who was trying to kick in his door Monday night.

According to Tim Gaffney with the Pinal County Sheriff's Office, the incident occurred around 8:20 p.m. near McKellips Boulevard and Ironwood Drive.

The 59-year-old homeowner heard the men at his back door and looked at the family's security camera, Gaffney said. He then saw the men wearing hoods and holding guns.

When they started kicking at the door, the homeowner fired a round through the back door, Gaffney said in a news release.

Another person in the home fired a shot after seeing a laser pointed at his head from someone outside, according to Gaffney. The suspects also fired rounds from three different caliber handguns into the home.

The suspects then ran from the scene, but 19-year-old Sal Anthony Olmos, of Mesa, was found injured in a neighbor's yard. The others kept running.

Without a gun, this American homeowner would be dead. And to be the way those who oppose the Second Amendment want it.

Wounded perp claims the homeowner owed him money.

Then you go to small claims court. You don't kick in a door.

Kind of wild up in that part of the country anyway. I would think that everyone living there should be presumed to be armed.

The hole in the door looks to be from a shotgun blast. The wounds were "non-life threatening" which suggests birdshot.

About the only time I could see shooting through a door as being justified is when you know, as the homeowner in this case did, that the guy on the other side has a gun. In which case I want something guaranteed to over penetrate with lethal force. I just took the #4 buck out of the breach of shotgun I would use to green uninvited nocturnal visitors. From here on out festivities will begin with #00 with #4 for follow up shots.
