For the second consecutive year, U.S. March tornado counts are among the lowest on record.

Through March 20, only four tornadoes have been confirmed across the nation. According to The Weather Channel's severe weather expert Dr. Greg Forbes (Facebook | Twitter), only two other Marches have featured fewer tornadoes through the first 20 days of March, dating to 1950:
1969: 0 tornadoes 1951: 3 tornadoes
However, the lowest March U.S. tornado count on record dating to 1950 was six tornadoes in March 1951, according to Forbes. If the rest of the month features at most one additional tornado, we would set a record low for the month.
If this sounds familiar, March 2013 was the least tornadic March in 35 years, with only 18 tornadoes.
March continues a slumbering tornado trend for the year. A preliminary 49 tornadoes have been tallied in 2014, which is roughly one-third of the 10-year average-to-date of 144 tornadoes.
"Twenty other years since 1950 have had fewer tornadoes (than 2014) thus far," says Forbes. "There had been just eight tornadoes thus far in 1969. The 41 tornadoes in February 2014 have kept the year from being closer to a record-low pace."

The worst tornadoes in my lifetime happened in late April, 2011. I hope next month is not a repeat. Remain vigilant!
It is not climate change or global warming we have to worry about, bur rather the warm, wet Gulf of Mexico and its cold, dry polar opposite in north-central North America. These natural forces are what causes tornadoes in our country, which has the highest amount of tornadoes in the world. A natural fact is all.
I celebrate a quiet tornado season, but do not forget what CAN happen.

Those of us in various ‘tornado alleys’ do not mind a bit that there are fewer tornados.
Just like those who live in hurricane zones are not wanting more hurricanes.

I was inside a tornado one time in Galveston (inside a building). And then another time, early one morning about fifteen twisters moved through Tulsa within a 30 minute time-span - one of them passing within six blocks of us.
Xenia. It was only 13 miles from where I lived at the time.
Perhaps if the Weather Channel started to name each tornado they could draw attention to this problem. /s
We lived in North West Ohio far away for my young mind but still in Ohio so it did have significance to me. I still remember the news broadcast on the six o’clock news. The pictures and video of the devastation stick in the mind.
I still occasionally hear of Xenia in the news and whatever the news I always think of the tornados.

I’m in Oklahoma and I’ve seen and heard about more tornadoes nearby than I ever did when I was in Texas.
Except is seems as though the tornado drought is accompanied with a rain drought. Not good either.
