Amazon’s major east coast data center is located in the tech triangle in Raleigh, North Carolina. I personally toured the data center, and it’s one Hell of an impressive site. Their hub and front-end head servers are based in Norfolk, Virginia. Not sure what you mean by “3rd world hellhole.” Every major network provider MUST have domestic data centers. They cannot meet SLAs without having localization. It’s impossible.
Our entire appdev department (we’re a top 10 CUSO) uses AWS for development. It’s cut our internal systems overhead in half and allowed them to develop on their own time and budget. It’s already turning business on its head, and Amazon isn’t the only player. Microsoft is a major cloud provider along with AT&T and Google.
