ARLINGTON, Wash. (AP) The search for survivors of a deadly Washington state mudslide grew Monday to include 108 names of people who were reported missing or were unaccounted for, but authorities cautioned the figure likely would decline dramatically.
Still, the size of the list raised concerns the death toll would rise far above the eight people who have been confirmed dead after the 1-square-mile slide Saturday swept through part of a former fishing village about 55 miles northeast of Seattle. Several people also were critically injured. About 30 homes were destroyed, and the debris blocked a 1-mile stretch of state highway.
The situation is very grim, Snohomish County Fire District 21 Chief Travis Hots said, stressing that authorities are still in rescue mode and are holding out hope. But he noted: We have not found anyone alive on this pile since Saturday.

Some would argue that Fife is already ruined..
I think I hit 60mph on my bike on the hill into Arlington.
Ouch.
This is a totally misleading headline. The emergency services people reported that they logged 108 reports concerning missing people. Logged calls does not equal missing people. From the looks of the before and after aerial photos there were not enough houses involved to account for that many people.
Awful. Thanks Mariner for this update.

I’m a little shocked this story isn’t getting more traction on FR.
Death toll at 14.
Reports of 108 unaccounted for.
Unofficial partial list of over 35 at this link: http://www.breakingskagit.com/530-slide/missing-530-slide/
Lots of really tragic stories, including family of 6 missing; wife and 4-yr old missing the husband and her other 3 children; Texas woman’s parents, daughter, and daughter’s fiance’ missing; plumber installing hot water heater missing; etc...

This is a crazy 2-part panorama of the slide area. Click the arrow in the photo and the photo pans left and right. The first image is the top half of the slide. When done with that image, click on the arrow at the bottom of the photo to go to the second image (from 1/2, to 2/2):
The top of the mudslide was at elevation 900 feet.
The river level, where the slide dropped to, is 260 feet.
640 feet of elevation drop... spread out over a square mile.... A mile of the highway is blocked. That means a mile of roads in both directions on which there could have been cars driving through, at 10:47 am on a Saturday morning. One woman was on her way to a friend’s house and she was due there at 11:00 am. She never made it, and she is unaccounted for. There were construction crews in the area. One person was taking a shower one minute, and buried under a tractor the next.

You wrote: “How do you go from 3 dead to 8 to 108 missing and miss that info? Do the news orgs not even care about those NOT living in a city?”
The answer is NO.
But also, this happened on a weekend, and the media doesn’t work on weekends. Besides, everyone was looking for MH Flight 370.
CNN is now saying 176 missing...
I like the Poodle Dog.
In the Pup Room.
Some may have been the same people.
