ARLINGTON, Washington (Reuters) - The number of people listed as missing from a devastating Washington state landslide that has killed at least 14 people rose on Monday to 176 from 108, Snohomish County emergency management director John Pennington said.
"The 176 I believe very strongly is not going to be a number that we're going to see in fatalities, I think it's going to drop dramatically," Pennington said, adding that there appear to be duplicates in some of those people reported missing.

Not good.
That's EXACTLY what the very same guy said when the number was 108.
The slide has destroyed at least 30 homes.
After examining the property records for the area, it was determined that 59 empty lots were impacted. Also in the 1-square-mile area, 49 parcels of land had “some structures” on them, including one cabin, 13 manufactured homes, 35 homes - 25 of which were believed to have been occupied at the time of the mudslide, and 10 were part-time or vacation homes.
I’m predicting with sadness the majority are dead. How long could they survive under all that? Not long.
isn't this what they said when it was at 108? what are they doing? using a fill in the blanks form?
In the Colorado floods in the fall, hundreds were listed as missing; it was eventually reduced to only 9 losing their life. The numbers were so high initially because of evacuations and inability to contact family/friends, etc., as infrastructure was so heavily damaged.
Counts don’t go up because of double dipping confusion for that many people. Never saw such in a tornado. There aren’t 176 unhappy people running from their lives.
For your Washington state ping list.
1 sq mile x 40 feet deep (estimate) of slurry too weak to walk upon. And 5 days of rain forecasted, coming up.
Was this the same general are visited by Lewis and Clark? I remember that they had a miserable time that winter with rain and storms.
L&C were along the Columbia River. They would have had to cross a few hairy passes in the Cascades to come out in the Skagit or Stillaguamish or Snohomish valleys.
Waiting for Libs to blame global warming AND fracking. Oh, yeah, and the Tea Party. And Rush Limbaugh.
Yeah right. Probably the same general weather. I doubt much has changed. Lotsa and lotsa rain.

The link is to a very informative interview with a geologist with the University of Washington. While the UW students and history profs probably believe in manmade global warming, most geologists don’t. The reporter tries to blame the cutting down of timber and global warming. The geologist is polite and tactful, while explaining what is really going on.
Excellent point at the end about “how we need to do a better job and getting the information out there.”
11.76 inches of rain so far this month. Not sure what the average is - I would guess 5 to 6 inches for the entire month.
Hopefully many of them escaped and are living with relatives/friends. My wife was in tears after learning one of her favorite patients at the clinic where she works is missing.
By the way my house is only 10 minutes from this tragic event site. But our area is flat with no hills nearby. We get flooded every few years but that is the worse of it.
Don’t forget Dubya!
Starting to rain in Arlington...
