Redskins owner Snyder to create foundation for Native Americans
Washington Business Journal ^ | 3/25/2014 | Bob Niedt

Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder has faced  intense criticism that the name of his National Football League team is insensitive to Native Americans. He is now responding. In a letter published on the Washington Redskins' website, Snyder pledged Monday he would create a foundation aimed at helping Native Americans.

Since last season, debate has surrounded the Redskins name; Oneida Indian Nation officials call the name offensive and a racial slur. Several publications have stopped using the word "Redskins" and even President Obama has chimed in on what he would do if he were Snyder.

In a letter addressed to the Redskins Nation Monday, Snyder said he has traveled to 26 tribal reservations during the past four months "[listening and learning] first-hand about the views, attitudes and experiences of the Tribes ... the more I heard, the more I’ve learned, and the more I saw, the more resolved I became about helping to address the challenges that plague the Native American community."

On its website, the Oneida Nation was  quick to respond. Indian Nation Representative Ray Halbritter stated, "We’re glad that after a decade of owning the Washington team, Mr. Snyder is finally interested in Native American heritage, and we are hopeful that when his team finally stands on the right side of history and changes its name, he will honor the commitments to Native Americans that he is making.”

Halbritter also said, ""We are also hopeful that in his new initiative to honor Native Americans’ struggle, Mr. Snyder makes sure people do not forget that he and his predecessor, George Preston Marshall, a famous segregationist, have made our people’s lives so much more difficult by using a racial slur as the Washington team’s name.”

I was thinking that Snyder is going to offer free rehab.

"Snyder Alcohol Treatment & Drug Addiction Recovery"

I learned something new today. I had never heard of this system, program or person.

I never had an addiction problem. Chocolate was habit forming for me. When I exercised all the time, it was fine. But, now I'm old and CAN'T exercise all the time.
Now, I have to stay away from chocolate and Coca Cola...two VERY HABIT FORMING substances. They have "bad" calories and offer VERY little in the way of nutrition.
I don't seem to be able to have "some" every "once in a while," so I eschew them altogether.

I also learned the difference between "addiction" and "habit forming." HUGE difference.

“American Indians are NOT native to the Americas. They came from the Siberian hunter groups. That is possibly why they have the same problem with alcohol as most Oriental Asians have.”

Do you remember “Kennewick Man”? I think that was the name; the oldest skeleton found in the Americas, if I recall correctly - and he was some type of Aleutian. The dig was shut down when his ancestry wasn’t politically expedient.

Here in NJ we have some fake Indians (the “Ramapough tribe”); they are mulattos descended from escaped slaves and various whites in the mountains along the NJ/NY border, they have no Indian DNA, and I believe only NJ and NY recognize them. The federal government doesn’t, which irks them because of all the freebies and casinos they’re missing out on...

I am a native American.
If he wan't to do something for Indians, why doesn't he just say Indians?

There were no NATIVE Americans. Your ancestors came from Siberian hunter groups...across the Bering Strait from ASIA to Alaska when it was a connected land mass. They were NOT "Indians."
Those Siberian hunter groups WERE, however, the FIRST Americans. You DO have THAT bragging right for all eternity.

As for the name "Indians," remember, Columbus thought he had reached the HOME of INDIANS....INDIA, that is, as in Asia. There have been Indians in India for THOUSANDS of years.

I DO remember the Kennewick man!! I had forgotten him!

THEY were the first Americans. Tula Git's Siberian hunter ancestry does NOT give her people bragging rights as the FIRST Americans.

In fact, as I recall, the Kennewick man had an OBLONG skull. Asians have ROUND heads. Therefore the Euro-human was here in America first!!!NOW I remember.

Thanks for reminding me. HAH!!

Their skulls and such were found near and around the traps they had set for the giant Mastodon beasties they hunted and ate. It's coming back to me.

Time for a break...and a lemonade.

P.S. Those faux Indians (Ramapough) set themselves up to be dependent as babies. The gubmin gives them HANDOUTS rather than a HAND UP...to keep them on the government nipple. Too bad for them. They DO know better and should be ASHAMED of themselves.

Let the pandering begin.

Stupid, though. It won't work. It never works.

I once saw an interview with Robbie Robertson of The Band, and he said that he and his Indian buddies referred to themselves as “Skins.” Those skins are pretty thick, apparently.

Just call them aborigines, like the Aussie.

I’m tired of all this PC garbage but the unPC is confusing. I too, hate “native”. They didn’t invent the country or come up with the name. So they are not native to this country as a people, only to some land later called North America.

What are they called in Canada? Native Canadians?
