Paul Ryan: Immigration a question of 'when'

Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) pressed the economic case for overhauling the nation’s immigration system on Wednesday, saying that reform is inevitable and necessary to boost growth in the United States.

Ryan’s fellow House Republicans have largely put the kibosh on moving forward with immigration reform this year, but some key GOP lawmakers are still lobbying their colleagues publicly and privately to tackle immigration. The 2012 Republican vice presidential nominee is among figures who have urged the GOP to embrace an overhaul.

“To me, it’s not a question of ‘if’ we fix our broken immigration laws,” Ryan said Wednesday at a breakfast hosted by the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. “It’s really a question of ‘when.’”

Ryan called the nation’s immigration laws “chief” among the problems that are curbing economic growth. Noting the rate of retirement among baby boomers, Ryan said reforming the immigration system is necessary to fill future jobs.

“Please know that we understand the value of immigration,” Ryan told the crowd. “We know its importance; we know its roots, its history here in America; and we have ideas on how to make this go forward and make it work so that we do have the rule of law, so that we do have reform, so that we’re not in the same position 15 years down the road.”

House Republican leaders signaled earlier this year that they were ready to move forward on immigration reform — months after the Democratic-led Senate passed a complete overhaul with a pathway to citizenship for millions of undocumented immigrants.

But the GOP quickly extinguished the chances that immigration will get done this year, citing skepticism that President Barack Obama will enforce any laws that Congress writes. Republicans are also reluctant to take on a divisive issue such as immigration during an election year in which they will almost certainly retain control of the House and have a good chance at capturing the Senate.

Ryan recently indicated in an interview with his hometown paper, the Janesville Gazette, that GOP leaders do not yet have the votes to pass immigration reform, but “we’re working hard to find where that consensus lies.”

Among the biggest obstacles on the way to that consensus is what to do with the millions of immigrants living in the United States illegally. House Republicans have yet to put forward a measure dealing with that issue, but Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (R-Fla.), at the same event Wednesday, was optimistic that a small circle of House Republicans has legislative language that could work.

(Also on POLITICO: Obama endorses House Dems)

“Can we deal with the folks that are here in a way that is reasonable, that does not violate the rights of folks who have done things legally, [and] can we strictly adhere to the rule of law?” Diaz-Balart said. “Some of us think we’ve achieved that magic formula.”

The same jerk that cut veteran's pensions. It was overwhelmingly overturned in spite of him, but the cuts were cooked up by him and Chuck Hagel. Ryan is a piece of work.

Thank goodness Hugh Hewitt tore Ryan apart on his radio show.

By God, I hate Paul Ryan down to the deepest pits of my soul. Him and all his fellow amnesty-pushing sellouts of the GOP-E. Just a few short months after the election, after he was ‘sold’ as the genuinely conservative counterbalance on the Romney ticket, Ryan is going around endorsing homo adoptions and touting amnesty. Damn this guy to hell! He and his ilk have paved the road that has led this longtime GOP-voter away from ever ‘trusting’ the blasted Republican Party on anything they say.

Can anyone who has followed Paul Ryan’s career tell me if he has ALWAYS been a muscle-head scumbag?

Paul Ryan is my rep. and I am very proud of him. I would love to answer your question but I'm a little vague on the definition of "muscle-head scumbag".

How about using our grown-up words on Free Republic? This a website for adults.

You’re PROUD of Paul Ryan? He’s a total Chamber of Commerce sellout enabling the invasion of the US. He singlehandedly compromised away the HOR’s power to keep the budget in line. He took Vets benefits to be a negotiating tool instead of a sacred obligation we owe those who served. He did not stand with Ted Cruz for the 21 hours....those who did voiced support. Have I forgotten anything?

Ryan’s trying to protect the cherry pickin’ industry. He’s wrong on this - I’d rather do a straight subsidy than all another 20 million illegals into the country. Pay the damn farmers... match what they’re paying and hire Americans. I suspect Americans will do the job - but they won’t work for ‘wet back’ wages... Which by the way is a form of slavery...

Then you are an idiot.

Too bad you don't live in Wisconsin. Come November you could vote for Burke against Walker for governor because Walker isn't a perfect conservative either.

Paul Ryan is my rep. and I am very proud of him.

I respect your views. There are times, even today, when I nod my head at what he says (i.e. the recent "inner city culture" comment that caused an outcry by liberals).

However, (and this is a BIG however), Paul Ryan will forever be known as the man who betrayed veterans who fought and bled for this nation.

Please understand why this is a factual statement, and not outrageous rhetoric on my party. As part of the Ryan-Murray "deal" that they sprang on veterans a few days before Christmas, Ryan insisted on a pension cost of living cut that only applied to military retirees. Not Social Security, but only to military veterans. More egregious than that, Ryan rammed through provisions that didn't even exclude widows or disabled veterans from cuts. Even if your leg was blown off in Afghanistan and you were 100% disabled, you were not exempt. Then, he tried to back track and allowed Harry Reid to insert language into the omnibus language in January that exempted some (hear me.....only some) medically retired veterans from cuts, but that was only a very thin slice called "Chapter 11" retirees. Most disabled veterans (even 100% VA rated disabled) still had their pensions cut. It was only after the debt ceiling was raised in a vote the same day that where the House and Senate overwhelmingly overturned the cuts, and Paul Ryan still voted against that.

And for what? To "save" a measly $6 Billion over ten years. The Federal government currently spends approximately $6.5 Billion per day. Paul Ryan was willing to sell those American who have given the most to this nation down the river.

You cannot save a man's character that is as flawed as Paul Ryan's.

So is Ryan angling for higher office, or making himself inelible for any higher positions?

If it's the former it's despicable, but if it's the latter, it's kind of admirable.

Only, please -- don't start loving him because the MSNBC types hate him.

Wow, you must like Socialist RINOs? Why are you here, you should be at home with Ryan's philosophical equals -- the DUmp.

I have followed Ryan for many years -- he has always been an evil fraud.

He outright lies when he stated he is conservative. This liar voted for TARP, No Child Left Behind, ethanol subsidies, cuts to our Veterans, and so on. No true Conservative would vote for such Statist policies.

Anyone who says they are conservative and supports Ryan is, well, a fool.

Again, Ryan is truly an evil human being -- if what he proposes on just immigration passes then our Republic as founded will be destroyed. Our Republic cannot survive an invasion of hordes of third-world scum who believe in big government, who have no desire to learn English, who are anti-capitalist, anti-individual rights and anti-American.

Our Republic will truly be destroyed if Ryan has his way -- yea that's something for which to be proud (NOT!)

“To me, it’s not a question of ‘if’ we fix our broken immigration laws,” Ryan said Wednesday

someone one ought to ask Ryan (on camera) why he thinks the current laws haven't been enforced over the past 24 years and why he thinks new laws tailored toward amnesty for 30 million plus illegals and how bolstering the socialist democrat voting block is going to help the common unemployed American citizen

The “when” will be real conservatives control the House, the Senate and the White House.

Here are some grownup words, I would vote for the democrat before I would vote for this traitor.

Even electing a RAT over this fraud would be good in the long run.

I took a lot of heat when I stated I would vote for a RAT over Boehner. No matter what, we will definitely keep the House.

It would be of great benefit for these TRAITORS (Ryan, Boehner, Cantor and other high-profile ant-Tea Party cretins) to lose their seats.

We are truly about to lose our Republic. Drastic steps must be taken to politically remove the evil RINOs.

Unfortunately, Boehner is in a 100% safe district. When this POS retains the reigns of the House next year his top priority will be to destroy the power of the Tea Party.

But the GOPe pukes of this site will say Boehner is better than any RAT.
