Paul Ryan: Immigration a question of 'when'

Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) pressed the economic case for overhauling the nation’s immigration system on Wednesday, saying that reform is inevitable and necessary to boost growth in the United States.

Ryan’s fellow House Republicans have largely put the kibosh on moving forward with immigration reform this year, but some key GOP lawmakers are still lobbying their colleagues publicly and privately to tackle immigration. The 2012 Republican vice presidential nominee is among figures who have urged the GOP to embrace an overhaul.

“To me, it’s not a question of ‘if’ we fix our broken immigration laws,” Ryan said Wednesday at a breakfast hosted by the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. “It’s really a question of ‘when.’”

Ryan called the nation’s immigration laws “chief” among the problems that are curbing economic growth. Noting the rate of retirement among baby boomers, Ryan said reforming the immigration system is necessary to fill future jobs.

“Please know that we understand the value of immigration,” Ryan told the crowd. “We know its importance; we know its roots, its history here in America; and we have ideas on how to make this go forward and make it work so that we do have the rule of law, so that we do have reform, so that we’re not in the same position 15 years down the road.”

House Republican leaders signaled earlier this year that they were ready to move forward on immigration reform — months after the Democratic-led Senate passed a complete overhaul with a pathway to citizenship for millions of undocumented immigrants.

But the GOP quickly extinguished the chances that immigration will get done this year, citing skepticism that President Barack Obama will enforce any laws that Congress writes. Republicans are also reluctant to take on a divisive issue such as immigration during an election year in which they will almost certainly retain control of the House and have a good chance at capturing the Senate.

Ryan recently indicated in an interview with his hometown paper, the Janesville Gazette, that GOP leaders do not yet have the votes to pass immigration reform, but “we’re working hard to find where that consensus lies.”

Among the biggest obstacles on the way to that consensus is what to do with the millions of immigrants living in the United States illegally. House Republicans have yet to put forward a measure dealing with that issue, but Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (R-Fla.), at the same event Wednesday, was optimistic that a small circle of House Republicans has legislative language that could work.

(Also on POLITICO: Obama endorses House Dems)

“Can we deal with the folks that are here in a way that is reasonable, that does not violate the rights of folks who have done things legally, [and] can we strictly adhere to the rule of law?” Diaz-Balart said. “Some of us think we’ve achieved that magic formula.”

We don’t care about immigration and government’s worthless ability to manage something so simple for decades.

It’s the ILLEGAL ALIENS INVADING OUR COUNTRY we care about you STUPID IDIOT PAUL RYAN.

This guy is redefining shark jumping. And Romeny still wonders how he lost in 2012?

Ryan isn’t even close to being a conservative much less a perfect one.

And for what? To "save" a measly $6 Billion over ten years. The Federal government currently spends approximately $6.5 Billion per day. Paul Ryan was willing to sell those American who have given the most to this nation down the river.

You cannot save a man's character that is as flawed as Paul Ryan's.

BRAVO! your entire post was brilliant. I didn't realize the $6Billion was over 10 years! Everything is POS proposes in the way of savings is always 10 years out -- what evil arrogance.

Ryan is truly an evil human being.

When Ted Kennedy, John McCain and George Bush Jr tried to ram through their amnesty betrayal, it was stopped by enough patriotic congressmen.

This time around, I'm not so sure.

Too bad your congressman wants to turn my homeland into another patch of the third world.

Open-border traitors don't inspire much pride with me.

Yes he has to be getitng payola from somewhere. We don’t need to let 11-30 million illegals stay here to boost growth. We have 330 million now. 50 million of them have no job.

“Chamber of Commerce and Americans for Prosperity. You need big bucks from your corporate paymasters if you want to run for the WH.”

Bingo, you hit the nail right on the head. The country clubbers only care about their tax cuts and are only conservative when it comes to their wallets. They are also greedy since they don't seem to understand what making a Dem majority means down the road. Paul Ryan is nothing but a corporatist pawn and backstabber in the McCain Graham tradition as well.

Ryan has always been pro amnesty like his mentor Jack Kemp. Soros Front Group America's voice is urging Paul Ryan to sign the petition. Paul Ryan said a pathway to citizenship is not amnesty. So this bill he is pushing now is apparently not amnesty as well. Look at these buffoons Paul Ryan would fit in.

Enforce what we have, and there will be nothing broken.

For some reason, that course of action never enters their mind.

I’m just a gigolo and everywhere I go
People know the part I’m playin’
Paid for every dance, sellin’ each romance
Ooh, what they’re sayin’

There will come a day and youth will pass away
What’ll they say about me?
When the end comes I know they’ll say just a gigolo
And life goes on without me

They backed Walter Jones and he only agrees with them on half the issues.

The Koch Brothers are smarter than Rove. Even if they are pro-amnesty I dont think they would want to push it any time soon. They fund all sorts of groups.

Paul Ryan is my rep. and I am very proud of him.

Sorry Jean, as a fellow Cheesehead, I hope Ryan loses big-time. If I lived in your district, I'd vote for the Rat.

Yes, the Koch brothers support amnesty, the doubling of the guest worker programs, and fund AFP. Koch industries have donated to Ryan.

The organizations themselves did not donate, rather the money came from the organizations' PACs, their individual members or employees or owners, and those individuals' immediate families.

“Noting the rate of retirement among baby boomers, Ryan said reforming the immigration system is necessary to fill future jobs.”
That was a demographic argument the Euros bought. They had a negative population growth. Their immigrants came legally.
Now the Scandinavians, French, Brits, etc., have a larger welfare class of surly immigrants, many with extended families.
