Navy: Sailor in Norfolk base shooting died protecting [female] colleague

The sailor who was slain during a shootout aboard a guided-missile destroyer at a Virginia base saved another sailor's life by jumping between her and a civilian gunman who was trying to board the ship, Navy officials said Wednesday.

(snip)

He parked his tractor-trailer cab near Pier 1, was able to walk onto the pier and began heading up a ramp toward the USS Mahan when he was confronted by Navy security, said Mario Palomino, the Naval Criminal Investigative Service special agent in charge of the Norfolk field office.

The man then got into an altercation with a female petty officer and disarmed her, Navy officials said. Palomino said Mayo stepped over the disarmed officer and fired his weapon at the assailant. He was serving on watch for the installation that night and came to help once he saw the civilian board the ship.

‘Lots of more questions than answered here,’
Yes, I suspect PO@ Mayo is responsible for saving a number of lives by his self sacrifice. If this individual had gotten on board the Mahan with a weapon a number of naval personal would have been shooting victims. This whole incident is disturbing.

Rules of engagement , US forces can not fire on the enemy unless fired on first ,only then they can return fire.

“Has the female petty officer been discharged from the Navy yet? She is obviously unfit for duty, let alone guilty of negligent homicide.”

Nowhere did I find basis for your assumption and judgement. People cross the quarterdeck 24 hours a day dressed in “Civies”. Military personnel do so with ID Card in hand and are subject to search at all times. The female Petty Officer did her job and the perp attacked her, probably when she asked who business was with and for ID. I have NEVER crossed a quarterdeck maned by fewer than two on duty at the post. Quite often there is an officer present as well. Also, unless a Security Violation has been called away, hand guns are holstered. She was attacked by surprise. The perp was apparently non-threatening until that point.

yes sir, Mayo was killed because he took the bastard on by himself............if another big strong male had been there to help, most likely this would not have happened.

it is silly to expect some silly girl to protect a billion dollar warship!

How many times will this have to happen before the Navy get’s it and tells higher authority civilians to FO..........

I’ve boarded Navy ships a thousand times and it was always, always a serious matter with armed male personnel there not taking any bs off anybody!

Yup. If she shot the attacker she’d be charged. Thanks to all our “leaders” owned by the UN.

One of my boys is a Navy Commander. He is also a body builder. Not an once of fat on him, but weight/height don’t jive, so out comes the tape measure. Passes every time.

Would you feel better if it was a male petty officer who was disarmed?

LOL, “nowhere do I find basis for your assumption and judgment”. What the hell does “People cross the quarterdeck 24 hours a day dressed in Civies” have to do with anything? This little girl, according to the article was ARMED! She was not carrying a toy, she was carrying a gun AND FOR A PURPOSE! The perp then took the gun away from her! Most likely that would not have happened if a big strong guy had been there and not a young scared girl. So, arguably PC got Mayo killed!

No, the female Petty Officer apparently, from what we read now, did not do her job! She allowed this guy to take her weapon away from her. So, she failed to do her job on that important and factual point. Having stood many a Navy guard post all over the world, I guarantee you your told a million times to NOT let this weapon be taken away from you!!!!

Then, you say “she was attacked by surprise”............uh, duuh............that’s the point! She failed again! She was guarding a billion dollar warship and should not have been surprised. Then you say her gun was holstered! Again, you make our point! A strong guy would have pushed off and in 1-2 seconds drawn his weapon and maybe shot the perp and saved Mayo’s life and protected the taxpayers warship. Your gal, most likely a typically weak (arm strength) female let the guy take it away from her and kill her fellow shipmate Mayo.

I’m sorry. I don’t often get this animated about anything. But, this young girl OBJECTIVELY failed her duty that night in the most egregious ways there are. Namely, her actions led directly to another sailor getting killed.

Notwithstanding any of the foregoing, there are no doubt some officers and non coms that are at fault at least partially as well and given a good kid lost his life in this incident where there is significant fault those people should walk the plank.

Perhaps. All actions start in the mind and the dead PO may have been back on her heels and unwilling to shoot because of the same said PC BS.
