Houston braces for invasion of 'Crazy Ants'
Fox News ^ | March 26, 2014 | Robert Gearty

This is one horror film plot that may be all too real: Billions of voracious ants are about to descend on the Houston area, destroying entire homes and anything else that gets in their way.

Rasberry Crazy Ants, even more destructive and mobile than their angry cousins, fire ants, are just weeks away from descending on the largest city in Texas. Since 2008, the ants, which entomologists believe came to Texas from South America aboard a cargo ship in the 1930s, have expanded their presence to 27 counties from just eight. Once in a home, they zero in on electrical systems, chewing through insulation and causing short circuits and general havoc.

“I’ve been in houses where every time you took a step you’d literally be stepping on thousands of ants with each step,” exterminator Tom Rasberry told FoxNews.com.

The hairy, reddish-brown ant is named after Rasberry because he was the first one to spot the insect in a Houston suburb in 2002. The ant, also known as the Tawny Crazy Ant, is even known to fight the fierce-stinging fire ant, another Texas scourge. Dormant until late April, Rasberry Crazy Ants thrive as temperatures heat up, prompting fears of a new advance in the coming weeks.

I put about 20 clock radios around the outside of my house. It keeps them from coming inside. Unfortunately, the neighbors keep calling the bomb squad.

Hopefully we won’t see hordes of locusts.

I remember rerouting a trip out West when Utah was experiencing an plague of crickets. Might have been 2010. People were sliding off the road because when smashed, the masses of crushed crickets created a slick goo on the road.

LOL I”ve tried the molten metal trick and about everything I’ve ever heard that might work. The only thing, and I mean the only thing, that I’ve found that eliminates them is a teaspoon or two of Amdro on the mound and the next day there is no activity.

Heat up 1/4 cup of Peanut Oil in a wok. Add 3 cups of Crazy Ants, and stir until they stop squirming. Add 1/4 cup of Black Bean Garlic Sauce. Serve immediately! Enjoy!

RE “Them!”

One of my favorite sci-fi movies when I was a kid. Giant ants... James Whitmore with the Thompson... flamethrowers in the sewer tunnels. It had everything!!!

“The Deadly Mantis” was another favorite.

Great “monster” movies, as I used to call them....

” When you take the bones out, is there any good meat on ‘em?”

Being they have an exoskeleton that would be remove the shell and meat in them, meatsack. Like eating very small lobsters.

put them in a taco and eat them. The Aztecs would eat ant eggs, called escamole, in tortillas. Never tried them, but who knows?? Might be a new hit. Louisiana is eating nutria’s...Texas...maybe crazy ants!

Oh yeah...don’t read the link and look at the pics if you have a queasy stomach...(might pertain to our current Administration)

Are there any solutions to these effers?

I've had good results using products from this outfit. Generally anything you can buy in a Lowe's type store (like Amdro) is worthless. The ants ignore it. These guys solved my carpenter ant problem when nothing else I tried bothered the little bastards.
