'One in 68 kids has Autism'

One in 68 children has autism, a 30 percent rise over the last estimate released in 2012, US health authorities said Thursday.

The latest US data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that the "proportion of children with autism and higher IQ (is) on the rise," said a CDC statement.

Previously, as many as one in 88 US children were known to have autism spectrum disorder, or ASD, a developmental disorder that recent research suggests may originate in the womb.

"This new estimate is roughly 30 percent higher than previous estimates reported in 2012 of 1 in 88 children (11.3 per 1,000 eight year olds) being identified with an autism spectrum disorder," said the CDC. The findings were based on diagnoses of eight-year-olds at 11 US sites in 2010.

The prevalence of autism varied widely, from one in 175 children in Alabama to one in 45 children in New Jersey.

The data continued to show that autism is five times more common in boys than in girls. In the United States, one in 42 boys is diagnosed with autism, compared to one in 189 girls.

Keep in mind that I know adults with autism that are STILL a drain on society. Trust me they are out there. I thought you were a conservative…..please don’t tell me I am mistaken.

Agree that immunization may be related to the increase. Have a 19 and 17 year old. Both of whom have not been immunized and function quite normally despite cousins who have been and are on the autism spectrum. Are we really to believe we can inject our infants with various attenuated disease causing agents and think it will have no impact in their developing immune system?

Having your first child in your 40’s is a new thing. You’re correct about women continuing to have children into the 40’s but most of them started in their teens and 20’s. Women who did not have children by the time they were thirty to forty were considered barren if married and old maids if single.

And yet the same processes that induce fertilility reduction are still operational at 40 regardless of how many children you’ve had before.

Unless you’re implying that having babies in teens and 20’s somehow makes the eggs you have left in your 40’s somehow healthier. Then that would be an environmental effect, not genetic. Ie, the environmental differences between the two groups of eggs (40 somethings who’ve had many kids and 40 somethings pregnant with their first) are somehow inducing genetic defects in the latter group?

I was thinking in terms that he might have ignored stimuli.

My friends have a son with Aspergers and he is graduating from college in Dec. with a double major if all goes well.

His older, "normal" brother has been a ne'er do well and "problem".

You realize, of course, that if your child was born in a hospital he was likely given the HepB vax at 1d of age with or without your express permission.

And probably got a booster at either 1m or 2m of age along with his other 2m vaccinations like DTaP, polio and HiB.

It is the new ADD. Wonder how screwed up these kids are going to be compared to the Ritalin babies? 20 some odd years ago when I tried to be a scoutmaster and my son a scout it seemed like 80% of the kids we had were on the crap. Broken homes, screwed up parents many would have been better off without and all that. What they really needed was direction, discipline and love.

One day my son and I confessed to each other that we were staying in scouts for each other and so we quit and spent our time together. I had better things to do than babysit somebody else’s screwed up kids. Better things to do like spend decent time with my own son fishing and restoring cars and stuff.

When are we going to stop this WAR ON CHILDREN?

from 1-88 to 1-68 in 2 years - a 30% increase - IN 2 YEARS

HOWVER

in 1970, it was 1 in 10,000!

When is this going to stop!

When are we going to STOP IT? Where are the politicians - the media? This should be given the 'missing plane' attention. The United States has the highest number of mandated vaccines for children under 5 in the world (36, double the Western world average of 18), the highest autism rate in the world - many times more and the link to vaccines is undeniable. With O'Care - they will be mandated...

Wondering what happen to these 11.3 in 1000 children that live to be 40 and the parents are dead? In 30 years there’s going to be enough to fill a city....

It’s probably more like 1 in 50 or less today.

I’m not saying it’s fertility based at all. There may be a nature, age of the egg or age of the sperm component there, but as with many things, some nurture is probably involved.

Older parents who have experienced difficulty bearing children may behave differently than parents who have never experienced any difficulty having kids. Older first time parents may approach dealing with children differently and there is less chance that older parents will have large families.

Smaller families with parents used to dealing with adults primarily, who are fearful about all the dangerous things in the world that can happen to their child, may consciously or subconsciously contribute to more instances of children (predisposed to autism) developing autism.

True, but the key metric is age at first pregnancy-to-term, not age at last. On that basis there has been a dramatic shift over the past century.

Autism develops in the brain before birth. It’s not a vaccine thing.

I fail to see the difference between a 40yr old egg and a 40yr old egg.

Unless there is some ‘protective’ effect of having been pregnant in the 20’s and 30’s. In which case the ‘genetic’ effect of autism isn’t strictly ‘genetic’. It’s somewhat environmental.

Which doesn’t mean the child wasn’t vaxd in the hospital on day 1 of life. They do that regardless of whether you want it or not. Unless mom was in the room with the baby 24hrs a day consider it done. I know a neonatal nurse who brags about getting the infants with that one regardless of whether the parents consent or not. She’s a do-gooder. She’s certainly not alone. Hospitals get extra bennies if they’re 100% for that vax series at birth.
