One in 68 children has autism, a 30 percent rise over the last estimate released in 2012, US health authorities said Thursday.
The latest US data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that the "proportion of children with autism and higher IQ (is) on the rise," said a CDC statement.
Previously, as many as one in 88 US children were known to have autism spectrum disorder, or ASD, a developmental disorder that recent research suggests may originate in the womb.
"This new estimate is roughly 30 percent higher than previous estimates reported in 2012 of 1 in 88 children (11.3 per 1,000 eight year olds) being identified with an autism spectrum disorder," said the CDC. The findings were based on diagnoses of eight-year-olds at 11 US sites in 2010.
The prevalence of autism varied widely, from one in 175 children in Alabama to one in 45 children in New Jersey.
The data continued to show that autism is five times more common in boys than in girls. In the United States, one in 42 boys is diagnosed with autism, compared to one in 189 girls.

Well, whatever you want to “call” the condition in our boy — it was something that “was there” and noticeable - without anyone in our family “having an agenda”.
I believe what you say is correct. Schools, drug companies, and parents can benefit from autism, ADHD, etc., so they may be quick to diagnose. Could be some environmental factors also. My daughter believes vaccinations are to blame for some of it.
According to several recent articles they think it might be developed during pregnancy and father’s being older than 45.

We were told my grandson had high functioning autism, but turned out he really had Lyme disease.
I noticed vision problems (eyes crossing, somewhat) and others in the family thought there were hearing problems (but I did not think so). Nonetheless, he was checked out with both and his hearing is perfectly fine.
His vision, on the other hand, was a slight problem, but the specialist did not think any intervention was needed at this time. Now, from my unofficial perspective, that problem seems to have lessened, but I do think he still has a problem - and with depth perception. That may be improving now.
We’ll go back to the specialist and we’ll see what to do next.

So the solution is to trust the multi-trillion dollar Phamaco-Medical-SWAT complex to tell us what is safe, and stay away from our own learning and any other form of healthcare on the face of the planet except that which is enforced at gunpoint. And especially don't learn from anything on the internet, because it's all crap - except your internet crap.

That designation has been removed as a separate name, and rolled in “Autism Spectrum Disorder”.
I am so shocked to hear conservatives talking so positively about this charade. This is a liberal advanced welfare program. You have no idea the money that is being made by parents of autistic kids. They are rolling in the dough. Follow the money and you will find a bunch of welfare queens going on. I am thinking this thread HAS to be a parody or sarcasm or something. Conservatives falling for the Autism scam is so sad. Liberals are eating it up though. The love conservatives being so stupid and gullible.
The speaking issue is just one item of several that he has problems with. There are significant delays in several measurable areas, besides speech. It’s not just “one thing” that diagnoses someone (like a lab test and an associated number with that lab test) - but it’s a combination of several things together. It’s the “whole picture” that makes the diagnosis.
I don’t think one, two and three year olds are using smartphones ... :-) ...

Believe me ... I can assure you it’s a very real problem that exists and exists apart from money, politics or anyone’s “agenda”.
One should realize that in these cases - it’s not “driven” from the standpoint of politics, or money or agenda. Talk to these parents and you’ll find out it’s “driven” from the standpoint of definite problem noticed - in terms of developmental delays in several areas. Things are not going right.
Now, I’ve been on this board long enough to know that many think that things only “proceed” from money, politics, or agenda - but with many people in life — these don’t play a part in being a “driver of circumstances” — especially in a situation like this.
Were they able to address the problem so that it is no longer affecting him?

I know that. I had a number of problems too (still do today). I still shudder to think of how different life would have been if I had been labeled as autistic instead of just weird and shy and quiet and obsessive.
I can guarantee you that we’re not rolling in the dough from this condition. Someone mentioned Social Security, but we haven’t gotten it. No funds are going into our account. But if we apply and if we even get approved, the little bit of money that might come in won’t offset things so that we would be rolling in dough - or even have any kind of “excess” - which would not be absorbed by costs associated with dealing with this. I can see these costs are only going to increase in order to try to even get him to the point where I would hope him to be - maybe something like Temple Grandin - which would be terrific.
I believe the real culprit is all the electromagnetic radiation that bombards us 24/7. Thirty years ago, we didn't have cellphones and wifi. Today, that radiation permeates every cubic inch of air space. I see a day ahead when liberals will start complaining about the dangers of wifi radiation and demand wifi-free zones in major cities. (Nevermind that they are the ones who pushed for citywide Wifi to begin with just like they did with mandatory car airbags that ended up killing kids riding in the front seat).
