Exclusive: Mitch McConnell Says He Wants To Govern Like This Democrat
time.com ^ | 3/27/14 | J. Newton Small

If Mitch McConnell becomes Senate Majority Leader next year, he says his leadership style will most resemble that of George Mitchell, the Maine Democrat who held the job from 1989 to 1995. McConnell is not attracted to Mitchell’s policies, but he likes the Democrat’s style.

“He treated everyone with respect,” McConnell tells TIME in an interview. “The Senate needs to run in a more collegial and open way than [under] the current majority leader, who has prevented members from both parties from offering amendments and basically done a lot of damage to the institution, in my opinion.”

Keeping that pledge may prove difficult. Not only do Republicans have to win six Senate seats to take control of the Senate, but McConnell is fending off the challenge of his career from Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes, who is leading slightly in most polls. On top of that, even if Democrats lose the Senate in November—and with 10 seats in play they may just—they are confident they will win it back in 2016 where Republicans have 24 seats to defend, eight of them in states won by President Obama in 2012.

Mitch wants to be a nicey-nicey majority leader, like limp-wristed Frist and power-sharing Trent!

In other words, he'll rule with an iron hand ONLY WITH CONSERVATIVES!

McConnell will be the classic go along to get along Rico who will measure success by how much he reaches across the aisle.

No matter how rotten Reid Durbin, and Summers treated us and froze us out of the process, McConnell and McCain will give Dems an equal seat at the table on it.

Beg to disagree. He will slam the Democrats, but first, he will listen politely, and allow them to offer amendments, etc...

Nothing wrong with that!

IMHO, we too often underestimate the "chess players"...in this day and age, it's an arcane game. It's kind of like calling Putin a "19th c. man" (whoever said that - F'ing Kerry?)...how uncool is that? and how's it working out so far for the arcane Russian one?

You don't want to bring a knife to a gunfight...

“Beg to disagree. He will slam the Democrats, but first, he will listen politely, and allow them to offer amendments, etc...”

There is absolutely no evidence of that, unless by slamming them you mean he will give a long, droning, tersely-worded! speech on the Senate floor in his marbles-in-his-mouth manner.

You don’t bring a chess piece to a gun fight either, which is what McConnell has been doing since his been minority leader.

These RINO idiots are never willing to stand in opposition to the abuse the Democrats dump on our country. After being abused all to hell, they act like submissive, co-dependent wives to abusive, alcoholic husbands.

We need a picture of Mitch McConnell sporting two black eyes, with the caption, “Harry Reid beats me because he loves me!”

ROFL!!

Here's a question: if McConnell as minority leader has a chess piece, what does Harry Reid have as majority leader?

I really wonder how Reid and some of these other guys manage to hold on to their power, and Reid in particular has been a complete autocrat. How? What "gun" does he have, other than seniority and a recent stolen re-election?

McConnell may not be be ideal, but he's pretty smart, I believe he has a steel spine behind that "wishy-washy" collegial "august body" demeanor, and I think he has the best chance to help unseat Reid, and then deal with him for the next four years.

The GOP needs to re-take the Senate, whether or not McConnell becomes the majority leader or defers to someone else.

That's the plain and simple of it, IMHO.

Sorry Mitch, you’re no George Mitchell! While I don’t agree much of the time with Se. Mitchell’s politics, he was honest!

He has a steel spine when it comes to conservatives. He’s a conniving, backstabbing prick. When it comes to the democrats, he’s a comfy pillow.

RE: George Mitchell posts...

"He was one if the most cold blooded , calculating hard ball playing majority leader in Senate history"...

and "HONEST"?

Sounds like a plan!! That's what we need!

I would just add, it's pretty difficult to accomplish anything as minority leader no matter HOW cold-blooded, calculating and hard-ball playing you are...

JMHO! Look at all the good work that's been done in the House, and it just goes to Harry Reid's desk to die. Same with anything the GOP Senators have managed to do...goes to Reid's agenda-setting rights as majority leader, and dies.

McConnell could not be worse than Reid. IMHO, if GOP re-takes Senate, he would rather quickly say "just kidding" to Harry and the Dem. minority, albeit very politely...

The really crucial thing is, McConnell's seat must be kept, whether by him or whoever his primary challenger is. It's a statewide office...don't risk "flipping" it!! The "best man" (or woman) in the primary must also ultimately win the actual Senate race, or all is for naught...

Mitch the Bitch thinks the tea party is worse than democrats. He stated he wants to crush them. Above he just stated he wants to let the other side offer amendments and work more openly with the democrats.

He’s got to go.
