94% of Electricity in 2013 Came from Reactors, Dams and Fossil Fuels

Ninety-four percent of the electricity generated in the United States in 2013 came from nuclear reactors, dams, and fossil fuels--including petroleum, natural gas, other gases, and coal--according to a new report from the U.S. government’s Energy Information Administration.

Only 0.2 percent of U.S. electricity during the year came from solar-power sources, and another 4.1 percent came from wind power.

Whew! Thanks to all that wind generated power we should have no problem keeping up once the epa forces those evil coal fired power plants to shut down. Uh, maybe not so much. Too bad we can't generate any appreciable power from all the rhetoric coming out of d.c.

But 100% of the bird kills came from wind and solar powered electric generation.

For the record, utility scale wind power generation is no longer subsided. The Production Tax Credit (PTC) expired Dec. 31, 2013. (There still may be a way to get some tax credits for inefficient small wind systems on an individual level, but they are noise factors).

The wind power industry knows it can produce power at parity cost to nuclear, hydro, coal and other generation sources (a front-page story in the industry trade press admitted as much earlier this year). Of course everyone wants free money if it’s offered, especially in exchange for political favors.

If I personally owned a whole lot of coal fed power stations, I’d shut down every one of them for a couple of days, just to make everyone suffer, and inform everyone THAT’S what 0bama would have happen, if he gets his way. Of course, I’d be labeled a “terrorist” of some sort, and thoroughly demonized, but I’d get the point across.

Rather than bending over and ‘taking it’, by surrendering to the leftists as many industries(healthcare/insurance/energy ect) have done over the years, those in high places need to fight back, and play for keeps!

We could probably quadruple that if they installed wind turbines around and in DC.

The maintenance, infrastructure, and upfront costs for thousands of wind turbines scattered all over the countryside are much higher than for a centralized power plant and its infrastructure for a given power output. High thermal efficiency base load plants are cheaper to build and operate over the long run.

You're overlooking government mandates, which require a certain percentage of electricity from renewables. These mandates are even more insidious than subsidies.

“94% of Electricity in 2013 Came from Reactors, Dams and Fossil Fuels”

then you gave the article’s subtitle:

“But 100% of the bird kills came from wind and solar powered electric generation.” LOL

thanks for the truth in humor!!

Wind power is unsightly, noisy and expensive and if it were not for heavy subsidization, there wouldn’t be any wind power.

Fugly ain’t descriptive enough. When we moved from FL to NV, we were driving in the middle of NFW Kansas and up popped some huge wind mills(bird slicer/dicers) spaced a couple of miles apart for a long way. Totally ruined my “view shed”. Hmmm. Wonder who I can sue because of the emotional scarring. LOL!
