Box Office: 'Noah' Winning Over Faith-Based and Mainstream Moviegoers
Hollywood Reporter ^ | Saturday, March 28, 2014 | Pamela McClintock

Darren Aronofsky's controversial biblical epic Noah is winning over faith-based and mainstream moviegoers alike at the North American box office, ending weeks of speculation as to whether the filmmaker's darker take on the story of Noah and his Ark would be a turnoff for more devout moviegoers.

The Paramount and New Regency movie easily topped the Friday chart with $15.2 million from 3,567 theaters for a projected $41 million to $43 million weekend, a strong start. Overseas, Noah is likewise prospering, grossing an early $28.3 million from only 21 markets (many of those opened Friday) and coming in ahead of Gravity. The film's global total through Friday was $43.5 million.

In North America, Noah received a C CinemaScore, indicating that it is still polarizing. But Christian moviegoers are turning out in force. According to those with access to grosses, half of the theaters doing the most business on Friday were in cities traditionally considered faith-based markets, including Salt Lake City, Reno, Tulsa, Mobile, Ala., Houston, San Antonio, and Orlando. Hispanics, many of whom are Catholic, are helping to fuel the film. (Hispanics are the most avid moviegoers in the U.S.)

If you don't like the movie, fine, but don't don't preach to me and tell me what I should or should not watch

I looked for where Star Traveler posted to you, but I didn't find it.

Did someone else preach at you on a different thread? Do you have the right thread?

Yeah ... the very same ones that fawned over the Dan Brown books made into movies.

“The people who get their biblical views from the movie are the same people who get their news from late night comedy shows.”

Two thumbs up on your opinion.

Hand me a thousand dollars right now to go see that movie ... I would hand it right back at you! You actually couldn’t pay me to go see it. It would be like paying me to listen to Obama give a speech ... either in person or by video ... I wouldn’t do it!

Thus far I’ve NEVER ONCE listened to a single speech from Obama. Ask me what Obama is all about and I can tell you. I don’t have to listen to a single speech from him to do that ... and I’ll guarantee you, I never will.

The same thing applies to LIARS in the Hollywood movie industry who LIE TO THE PUBLIC to get them in there ... just to listen to their propaganda! No PROPAGANDA for me from Obama or from this LYING ATHEIST DIRECTOR who tries to tell me that an “atheist” can actually tell the truth about that account in the Bible.

Obama and that director are CUT FROM THE SAME CLOTH!

Here’s what I said elsewhere ...

I don’t mind science fiction movies, as long as they’re not trying to tell me that this is actually what is going on ... LOL ...

Here’s what the producers of the movie were saying before it came out ...

“The pre-release advertising promoting the movie Noah made a point of stating that while the director took artistic license in the production it was still faithful to the biblical story.” [ ... ]

The producers tried to keep these details secret from the faith-based public in order to not have a backlash from negative reviews that would affect the all important opening weekend box office. I learned about some of these details last year from a French graphic novel (which I was shown in Germany) upon which the film’s script was based.

As far as I know this was not translated or released to the English-speaking market, presumably to prevent these fictional elements from getting out to the faith-based American audience. Now, the secret is out and it is hoped that informed audiences will, like Noah in the film, judge this parody of the biblical account, unworthy of cinematic salvation.

Really? The first time I ever heard Noah he sounded just like Bill Cosby.

Oh and PS - Noah speaks with an English accent. Now how cool is that? Almost like Picard from Star Trek who grew up on a French vineyard farm speaking with an English accent.

I am more interested in pics of Helen Thomas in her undies than in seeing this movie.

If such pics of Ms Thomas exist, please do not post them.

mini-review-—

Aronofsky’s decision to include big special effects-laden battle scenes is curious at best and disastrous at worst. These sequences, presumably included to make the film more visually spectacular, lapse into lethargy because there’s no real sense of tension or danger. We know Noah is going to get the ark underway. We don’t care about any of the CGI characters involved. It’s just eye candy. This raises larger questions about the pacing. At 138 minutes, Noah is too long; there are stretches when it drags.

Russell Crowe provides a fascinating interpretation of the title character. Every other depiction I have encountered of Noah presents him as a humble, pious man. Crowe’s Noah is a warrior. He kills more than his share of the unrighteous. He is intractable in his belief that humanity has earned its fate. And, when the journey is over and the ark has come to rest in the purified world, he is overcome by despair. Irrespective of whether or not the character of Noah is being used as a commentary on modern-day religious zealots who believe they have a monopoly on “the truth,” it’s a fascinating and unconventional interpretation of an iconic individual.

Yep, been around long enough to know that sometimes folks accidentally jump threads or post to the wrong people.

So, does that mean that you think the guy posting the thread had somehow targeted YOU???

this is the MOST UNBIBLICAL presentation of a Biblical story EVER!

Although I've never seen it and probably never will, The Gospel According to St. Matthew, produced in 1964 by Pier Paolo Passolini, a Communist, might give Noah a run for its money.

Heck! I just thought he was off his meds. I wouldn’t want to get on a guy’s case who was off his meds ... it might send him “off the deep end” and then I would feel really bad ... :-) ...
