Russia believes that the only way for Ukraine to reach a settlement is to sign a federal agreement, said Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, in an interview with the anchor of the 'Saturday News with Sergei Brilev' TV programme earlier today. "Current developments in Ukraine have resulted from a deep statehood crisis, triggered, among other things, by the inability (Id hate to think of reluctance) of every successive leader coming to power to reconcile the interests of Ukraines western region and Ukraines South-East", the Russian Foreign Minister said. "This cannot continue that way anymore".
"We are certain that Ukraine needs profound constitutional reform. In all fairness, we cant see any other way to ensure the stable development of Ukraine but to sign a federal agreement", Lavrov said.
"Some may know better and are, perhaps, capable of finding some magic spell to ensure living in a unitary state, with people in the West, on the one hand, and the South-East, on the other, celebrating different holidays, honouring different heroes, developing different types of economy, speaking different languages, thinking differently and gravitating towards different European civilised cultures but I think its pretty difficult to live in a unitary state like that", Lavrov said.
"We suggested that things be put right in all areas at once, the more so since an obligation to that end was signed by Vitaly Klitshcko, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, Oleg Tyagnibok, and the Foreign Ministers of Germany, France and Poland. We further suggested that a constitutional reform be launched at once, one that would prove comprehensive and involve every single political force and region, with equal voting rights. We suggested that they start negotiating a federation that would grant each region sweeping powers in the fields of economy, finance, culture, language, and education, as well as external economic and cultural

The important question is: Did Obama pick Wisconsin over Arizona? /sarc
Obama can and will be appeased because he is in so far over his head it will be easy to manipulate him and the western media that will proclaim his slightest achievement as an earth shaking victory. Chamberlain’s folly wasn’t recognized as folly until it was too late.
The United States is in decline and Ronald Reagan is not only not President but a extreme socialist / moderate communist is President. This was predictable.
We are probably lucky they aren’t demanding Poland yet. They will get around to it though. They will push, until someone who’s able
pushes back.
Russia’s compromise equals “I win, you lose”. Obama is sure to buy it. When you don’t value freedom in your own country, can you support it elsewhere.
Obama = Globalist + Socialist/Crony Capitalist = Communist
Putin = Ultranationalist + Socialist/Crony Capitalist = Fascist.
Google Ukraine and soros and you may see the real story behind the story. It maybe that putin is the man we shold back.
Four postings this cycle citing Kremlin news resouces all pushing for a “ constitutional solution” for a neighbor (Ukraine) urged from a country which held a phoney plebicite (Russia) annexing one piece of it where they have a naval base and were ignoring treaty agreements. And has the equivalent of 4 armor divisions already on their soverign territory. Being supported and advocated by the usual suspects who should be rounded up and deported.
Russians are a minority in about 95% of Rump Ukraine.
Kremlin news resources lay out the official position of Russia and their intentions are very clear. Similar to our own “Kremlin” news resources that lay out the official position of the Obama administration.
And regarding the constitutional changes, what’s wrong with the citizens of the Oblasts electing their own governors instead of having them appointed by Kiev? Do you also support Obama appointing all of the governors for each of our states instead of them being elected by their citizens?
You have to realize that there are many on FR, old cold warriors such as myself(though I no longer subscribe), that are opposed to anything that could in any way benefit Russia.
It does not matter how reasonable, fair or decent that thing may be.
My point is that this isn’t our business neither is it NATO’s business. Especially with flunkees like Obama, Kerry, Nelund, Jarrett, Soros running things. It’s between Ukraine, Russia, Poland, Germany and France to work things out.
Why France? The other ones might want to tweak the borders to their advantage. I'd add to that list Turkey.
I would think it's in the interest of everyone EXCEPT the global manipulators who wanted instability and a takeover of Ukranian assets to solve this mess. Ukraine had over 20 years; it's a failed state, and the thugs who led the coup have nothing positive to offer. (unless someone's in the market for really accurate snipers)
It seems rational that Ukraine be split and the borders realigned after this many years. And, yeah, DUH...a vote is legitimate and a violent coup is not.
What if it benefits all Ukrainians?
More freedom is not about whether Russia stands to gain; its whether it preserves Ukraine as a country.
Unless of course you don’t mind Ukraine being carved up.
I cannot perceive a Vital US Interest there.
Maybe there is one, but I can't see it.
I understand the humanitarian interest and I understand the furtherance of Liberty interest. I can even see an interest in preventing Russian from exercising power.
But from my point of view none crosses the threshold to warrant any real, non-military action by the USA.
We should wag our finger a couple of times and get back to drilling/fracking.
Really? How so Russia?
Another who doesn't believe in self determination.
Yeah, back Putin if you’re for an autocratic former KGB man who stole $75billion from his own people, supported the communist party instead of Reagan, Solidarity, Thatcher, and the Pope, and whose sole claim to power is that he’s vicious enough suppress anyone else in Russia who’d aspire to serve the Russian people. Putin’s a scumbag.
I believe in the ballot box. That isn’t self-determination?
You just said that Ukraine should be split.
