SWAT Targets Family for Drinking Tea
The American Interest ^ | March 27, 2014 | Russell Mead & Staff

In 21st-century America, the most innocent of activities could have a SWAT team busting down your door. Reason profiles the Harte family, who were the victims of a SWAT home invasion after police raided their garbage cans (h/t Ben Domench). An unreliable field test falsely identified Addie Harte’s trashed teabags as marijuana, and SWAT leapt into action. The Hartes didn’t just suffer the trauma of the raid—they had to spend $25,000 just to find out why they were targeted.

Since pretty much forever. The rationale seems to be that once you have put something in the trash, you have relinquished possession, and then anyone else is free to use it for any purpose.

But that doesn't include entering your property to rummage through it does it? When I had a security clearance the Chief of Security at the facility at which I was employed ordered my trash on my property to be searched and photographed. After seeing photos of my trash on the chief's desk when he exited during an interview, I reported it to the company ombudsman and after a time the chief was demoted.

Tea is supposed to go in the compost pile in the backyard.

I suppose they think the only plant that can be grown with hydroponics is Pot????? They’ve lost their freakin minds.

They targeted these people because they were tea party people.

See post 25. As for the trash collector, does your contract specify that the collector is responsible for the trash between when it is placed at the curb and when it is actually collected?

Yep. You posted an addendum regarding the sanctity of trash on one’s own property while I was raising that question. I saw yours after I posted mine. But apparently some authorities think they have the right to trespass by virtue of the catch all: “probable cause.”

No, I’m sure it doesn’t. I live in the country. My trash is placed on MY property before the trash collectors pick it up. After looking into it, it does seem to be okay with too many jurisdictions that is fine for LE to steal your trash.

Same as the drug sniffing dogs.

When I got 'swatted' by the local police, they stated that a 'sniffer dog' had 'hit' on a bedroom and the kitchen. Both my wife and I don't smoke, drink, swear (much) or do drugs; so I have to assume that the dog 'hit' on the SIX F***ING cats my wife and I have. I had to move to lower our stress levels and help manage the nightmares.

An article in the Chicago Tribune stated that these mutts are only 45% accurate.

The use of those four-footed bastards (oops) should be OUTLAWED!

That is actually pretty high for these dogs. By the way, the dog isn’t the bastard, the cops misusing it is.

It was the DOG that couldn't tell the difference between pot and cats. :-)

I have read that the dog will 'hit' on a target solely to please his handler.

They had a greenhouse where they were growing tomatoes. The purchase of grow lights for the tomato garden kicked this off. They raided the garbage cans and found tea. The 25k was for a lawyer to find out why their door was kicked in.

The idiots involved in said door kicking knew their actions were indefensible and declined to share the whole story.
