I am not naïve enough to believe that having elected Mitt Romney president or consigning the Democrats to the minority in both houses of Congress would change all that. But unless you are ready to give up on electoral politics entirely and I confess to wavering on that question with a bias toward despair then it is a matter of deciding whether X is preferable to Y. And sometimes that is a pretty easy call. Contemplating the inevitable shortcomings of elected Republicans, conservatives may consider the situation and think: The lesser of two evils is still evil. And it is. But its also lesser. And if thats the choice we have, it may be unpalatable but it is a choice that we have to make. I liked the Cthulhu 2012 slogan Why Vote for a Lesser Evil? but thats a joke, not a program. The reason to vote for a lesser evil is because were responsible adults who dont want the greater evil to prevail.
If this seems inconsistent with more than a little of what I have written before, I suppose a personal note is in order. I left the Republican party because I didnt want to be part of any organization that would have Arlen Specter as a member, and because I was appalled at the fiscal incontinence of the Bush years. And Ive very much enjoyed being able to tell people that Im not a Republican. (Some days more than others, as you might imagine.) That being said, I am coming around to the view that Id rather be disappointed by Republicans who periodically fail live up to their principles than have my country pillaged and hobbled by Democrats who consistently live up to theirs.

“Romney was the last chance for the GOPe to get (at least partial) conservative support for their lame candidates.”
That religiously selective abortion pusher is where they lost me forever. McCain was the end of the line for me, and even then I voted for the ticket hoping McCain would die the day after being sworn.
With the leadership, it's not periodically, it's all the time. And it is a great deal worse than just falling short.
It's traitorous back room deals with the enemy. Pushing for amnesty against the will of the majority of voters (and the safety of the country) is not a simple failure to live up to principles. We passed that station a long time ago.
Isn’t it interesting how we are still so far out from the election but are already being softened up?
Gotta get that incremental evil in there somehow. Cuz you know, evil isn’t evil when it could be worse evil! Then it’s lesser evil and lesser evil is good evil. So since evil can be good as I just proved, we should embrace lesser evil and work toward greater evil since more is better.
Simple really.
Well, the GOPe’s support will only wane from 2012.
Happens every time it seems
It’s not their principles they fail to live up to, they have none
It is pathetic how fast people will embrace ‘lesser’ evil rather than fight against evil period.
Imagine Washington/Franklin and co. embracing lesser evil. We have become evil and refuse to man up to it. Then again, evil and cowardice go hand in hand...
Most likely. I see nothing happening that will reverse it.
The revolution was too radical. The GOP would be asking for compromises that leaves England in charge of the colonies with tiny concessions to the colonists
I stand correctly corrected. Amoral scum are incapable of having principles.
If FR existed back then, there would be a number of posters railing against the Founders and demanding purist colonists be punished for wasting the King’s tea.
Actually, there were those types...
Some of them were so upset by liberty they went to Canada
Oh if only the modern versions would do likewise. Or go to Europe where there are more like them.
Be a GOP BITCH, vote for Mitch!
National Review is a `lesser evil.’
Exactly.
Then you'll love the Hillary Clinton / Mitt Romney [D] vs John Mcain / Jeb Bush [R] that's planned for 2016.
(The above is meant to be cynical humor, not a suggestion for our elites overlords to show that they're committed to reaching across the aisle.)
Much like the Intolerable Acts, yes?
Thank you sir, for standing up for something.
