Bishop in the GOP race to replace U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers

Republicans are jumping in quickly to replace retiring U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, who announced Friday he’ll be leaving Congress at the end of the year to be a talk radio host.

Mike Bishop, former majority leader in the Michigan Senate, confirmed Monday he’ll be in the running. And Rochester Hills Mayor Bryan K. Barnett has set up a page on the social media site Facebook to push his own candidacy.

Bishop, an attorney and Rochester Republican, said via the social media platform Twitter that he’ll seek the seat.

“Yes sir,” Bishop tweeted in response to a direct message Monday morning. “Petitions have been printed and they’re being distributed today. Formal press release today or tomorrow.”

Republican competition is expected to be fierce for the GOP-leaning 8th Congressional District that represents Ingham County, Livingston County and the much of north Oakland County.

Also considered viable GOP candidates for the seat are former Michigan Republican Party chair Saul Anuzis and 33-year-old state Sen. Joe Hune from Livingston County.

So far, the only Democrat officially filed with the Federal Election Commission is Susan Grettenberger, although Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero’s name is also circulating as a possible Democratic challenger.

This is the district next door to mine to the north.

I don't know a lot about Mike Bishop, although I'll have to do some digging on his actions during the Granholm tax era. I know nothing about Bryan Barnett. I've heard a lot of good things about Joe Hune.

Bishop, an attorney

I thought we decided no more Lawyers. I swear I saw that on here a few times. Aren’t their other occupations that can run for Congress?
