A audacious project to send volunteers on a one-way colony trip to Mars is drawing up plans for simulation outposts on Earth to give potential Red Planet settlers a taste of Martian life.
Mars One announced their plans for mock Martian colonies Thursday (March 27), though the nonprofit hasn't picked a location for the first simulator yet.
"We are very eager to get started constructing actual hardware for our mission that is important for training future Mars One crews and preparing them for their life on Mars," Bas Lansdorp, co-founder of Mars One, said in a statement. "We are going from theory to practice." [Photos: How Mars One Wants to Colonize the Red Planet]
Lansdorp hopes to put astronaut bootprints on the Red Planet by 2025. But the first Mars One colonists won't be coming back to Earth. Instead they'll live out their days in a thick-walled habitat, protected against harmful solar particles and cosmic rays, donning spacesuits to go outside in a place that lacks a breathable atmosphere. The mock habitats would attempt to recreate those isolated conditions, though at first, they won't

shouldn't that be AN audacious ?
either bad editing or that's "common core"..... i'm not sure which.
anyway, i'm sure we all know some great space cadets we could send to Mars on this project.
Try Detroit.
Didn’t we already do the self-contained habitat to simulate space thing in the 1980’s?
April Fool's First ??
Yeah, Biosphere... they were crappy tippers when I delivered pizzas there.
The good news is that their pleas for rescue may spur quicker development of a Mars-return capability.
Can’t they just use the studio they created to film the fake moon landings?
How are they going to simulate 1/2 earth gravity?
lolz
Biodome..................
“Cant they just use the studio they created to film the fake moon landings?”
Sure, just switch the grey dust for ochre and have the actors bounce less. Plus fake in a sky color, Mars has some color in its sky.
Helium pills.
One-Way Ticket to Mars Colony Project to Send Obama to Mars
“Lansdorp hopes to put astronaut bootprints on the Red Planet by 2025.”
Nice try Lansdorp, surely Armstrong made boot prints when he planted the flag on Mars the very honorable and intelligent Rep.(D, real big D) Lee inquired about.
Populating a Red Planet sounds positive to me, especially if it has 2 Senators and some House members.
Finally, the color of 'Red' coming in handy! Of course, not the Enemedia will want to switch back that Red/Blue thing.
Gravity boots of course.
I have a couple of volunteers.
Extra foamy and springy boots.
Once they become the first humans to land on and explore Mars I hope the Chinese will release pictures of the place.
Until we embrace new rocket technology (and a manned space program), the only astronauts who will be landing on Mars are dead ones.
