Selling a Poison by the Barrel: Liquid Nicotine for E-Cigarettes
The New York Times ^ | 03-23-2014 | Matt Richtel

Posted on 04/03/2014 2:26:43 PM PDT by PaulCruz2016

A dangerous new form of a powerful stimulant is hitting markets nationwide, for sale by the vial, the gallon and even the barrel.

The drug is nicotine, in its potent, liquid form — extracted from tobacco and tinctured with a cocktail of flavorings, colorings and assorted chemicals to feed the fast-growing electronic cigarette industry.

These “e-liquids,” the key ingredients in e-cigarettes, are powerful neurotoxins. Tiny amounts, whether ingested or absorbed through the skin, can cause vomiting and seizures and even be lethal. A teaspoon of even highly diluted e-liquid can kill a small child.

But, like e-cigarettes, e-liquids are not regulated by federal authorities. They are mixed on factory floors and in the back rooms of shops, and sold legally in stores and online in small bottles that are kept casually around the house for regular refilling of e-cigarettes.

it got to the point , when I was trying to quit , that as a right handed smoker , I had to tell my self that if that right hand picked up another damned smoke I would instruct my left hand to pick up a .22 pistol and put a round thru the palm of the right hand . I meant it , the threat worked . Haven’t smoked in 15 years now . Freedom feels great! and all the $$$ I have saved ....

And just to be clear, I don’t use e-cigs. I just like that the people that sell them and use them are pissing off the aforementioned interests.

“...without all the carcinogens and the awful stink.”

In my opinion that is the best part! A few years ago my wife and I both smoked in the house. We didn’t have many friends over. They couldn’t stand it! Can’t say as I blame them. I smoke outside 90% of the time, but my wife couldn’t do it to save her life.
Now we’re both using the e-cigs (well, she still smokes a real one several times a day, but outside). House smells like strawberry cheesecake!
Damn, I’m hungry!

Actually a LOT more than caffeine.

Undoubtedly, e-cigs are cutting into tax revenue, so they must be demonized and taxed.

This needs some lies and the usual useful idiot combination of leftist and nanny-state right wingers (several of whom are here on this thread) to be accomplished.

For the same reason people drink coffee, I would think.

Seems you can also buy pure caffeine in bulk. 20KG is less than 400.00 online. Lethal dose is about 10g.

Nope, less. Nicotine is much shorter acting and causes less cardiovasular stress than caffeine.

Which doesn’t count the clotting, the bronchiospasms, hyperinsulinemia or bunches of other stuff. Not to mention the fact that nicotine does it’s fun at much lower doses. Sorry but anybody thinking caffeine has just as many side effects as nicotine quite simply is not thinking.

So what exactly are they smoking?

They are not kicking the addiction, but they are not smoking.

LOL! Yeah, the metal mouthpiece is annoying and clicks against my teeth if I’m not careful. However, be that as it may, I was pecking away at the keyboard with one hand and using the other to suck down some tasty bug juice.

Cheers!

Guess it all depends on how literal you want to be with your verbs. On a strong technical level they’re vaporizing rather than smoking, but I don’t see a point in quibbling. In the community “quitting smoking” means quitting nicotine, nobody congratulates anybody for quitting smoking if they’re method is switching to chew, still on the nic is still on the nic.

...it’s just changing delivery system.

Minus the tar, minus the carbon monoxide, minus the 7,000 other chemicals in tobacco smoke.

But other than that it's exactly the same. /s

I’m a member of the having quit smoking cigs community you speak of. 20+ years. No e cigs.

We long time members of that community didnt have the option of ecigs, so I guess what I’m suggesting is that maybe the terms of the discussion have changed a bit. You can quit using the cancer sticks but can continue to feed your craving. An addict but not a smoker.

Sorry about that. Here is your whole post.

I know lots of people who switched to them, 3/4 of the smokers where I work switched. But none of them are getting away from nicotine with them, it’s just changing delivery system.

Minus the tar, minus the carbon monoxide, minus the 7,000 other chemicals in tobacco smoke.

But other than that it's exactly the same. /s
