UPS Fires 250 Employees For Staging A 90-Minute Protest To Defend Co-Worker

UPS is firing 250 Queens, N.Y., drivers for walking off the job during a 90-minute protest in February. The company dismissed 20 of the workers after their shifts Monday and issued notices of termination to another 230 employees, notifying them that they will be fired once the company has trained their replacements, UPS spokesman Steve Gaut told Business Insider.

The workers were protesting the dismissal of longtime employee and union activist Jairo Reyes, who was fired over an hours dispute, according to Gaut. The New York Daily News first reported on the firings.

Local politicians are threatening to cancel city contracts that give UPS millions of dollars in breaks on parking fines.

"They took a grievance with one employee and turned it into notices of termination with 250 workers," New York City Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer told The Queens Courier. "That’s outrageous. These are good, hardworking employees who have a contract for UPS. To try and break this contract, break this union, is something that is unacceptable and we can’t tolerate."

UPS fired back that it might need to terminate additional employees if the city alters its contract.

I would wager that most of those workers felt they had no choice but to go along with the wildcat strike. The union could make it very uncomfortable for anyone crossing the picket line.

What book or essay collection of Mencken’s did you get your quote from?

So you’re a communist?

You've got it exactly backwards. It was Marx who said the capitalist would so exploit the workers that they would rise up and overthrow them. But the capitalists realized that paying workers a good wage is good for business and creates a middle class capable of buying more than groceries and gasoline.

The system is broken and it is not because some working Joe or Jane would like to be able to afford a two week vacation and have some hope of retiring.

Wake up and stop cheer leading the demise of the America. Grossly overpaid is not good. Grossly underpaid is far worse.

While UPS is Teamsters, it’s my experience that they manage the union people very effectively. They pay top wages but get excellent productivity for it.

Every UPS driver I ever saw worked his butt off, barely had time to take care of the paperwork, load my packages and get to his next stop.

I try not to think of these things as “efforts,” really. Makes it seem too much like work, and if I wanted to work I’d get a job.

I love to have a job, but there simply isn’t time. Ah, the good old days. Hours of commuting separated by seemingly limitless periods of boredom. Now that I think of it...

Nah, crony capitalism is a valid term, and it was coined by the Tea Party who despise the corrupt crony partnership between big government and big business.

It resulted in trillions of public debt passed onto taxpayers that should have instead resulted in direct CEO, corporate, and shareholder bankruptcies. The Grand Scam is another name for it where the few corporatists benefit and the many are billed courtesy of hacks in the fed and chamber of commerce.

Let ’em go buy a route from FedEx.

Ya wanna bet UPS goes the same way?

Employers don't want employees...Period. They see employees as heavy luggage, a cut in their profits, too costly, etc...

If ya can't off shore to low wage foreign worker land, go independent contractors, franchises etc., or just hire illegal aliens like so many other business, etc.

I don’t recall. I think I just pulled a page about him on BrainyQuotes from the web or something. There are a lot of excellent Mencken quotes.

OOOPs missed linking.

If you have the connections and cronies in politics, the corrupt hacks that we are forced to choose from will build it for you free of charge, except to us taxpayers. Stadiums built all over the USA by both Parties so bozos in sports and oligarch owners can get richer all on our dime, not their risk.

That’s “CRONY CAPITALISM”. That is what is destroying the once great USA and the GOP, whether you like the term or not.

Boy, whoever is running that biz is the pinnacle of naive.

Watch for 200+ injury claims...for a start...

Really? I wasn't aware the TEA Party was around in 1998 when William Safire applied the term to corrupt Asian economies. My memory must be getting feeble.

Oh wait....

You need to brush up a bit on this, no?

I don’t like the term. Never will, because while it’s cronyism, it ain’t the capitalism I have come to know and love.

Yeah, there’s some management in NYC that’s going to be rubbing elbows with labor in the unemployment lines, sure.

“Employers don’t want employees...Period. They see employees as heavy luggage, a cut in their profits, too costly, etc... “

I’ll tell you what else they see......USA sovereignty, our borders, and our Constitution as being a very real annoyance to their global profits and power.

Conservative and Corporatist are polar opposites except to political propagandists. Corporations need to represent a patriotic desire to improve the American economy and security for Americans, and not just profits for Chinese shareholders.

heck of a post. And 100% correct.

I guess I’m a red too. Like I care. I’m racist, intolerant, hateful, anti-free market - add whatever label needed by those terrified of truth.
