Walking Dead Hiatus: The Last Man On Earth
YouTube ^ | 1964 | Ubaldo Ragona

In order to prevent zombie withdrawl, here is a good dose of zombies. Vincent Price's Last Man on Earth. (1964) This was one of the three versions of Richard Matheson's novel I am Legend, on film, and was credited by George Romero as being his inspiration for the Night of the Living Dead.

The zombies in this film don't obey the rules set down by Romero, they are actually more of a cross between vampires and zombies. They are still intelligent, and can talk. This movie has one of the creepiest scenes ever in a zombie film, at least for me when I watched it long ago as a kid. Even the Walking Dead made reference to it in its first episode.

Enjoy

The Last Man on Earth

Great post! This early ‘60s “Famous Monsters of Filmland” era of low-budget horror movies — and this one is a great example — was such a terrific time. This one on a triple bill with “The Tingler” and “House On Haunted Hill” would be a Price-O-Rama!

I’ll throw in an “Omega Man” to go with that!

“The Tingler” was horror city.
Makes my flesh crawl just thinking about it.
Surprised they haven’t made a remake.

I posted about this movie with the link from the wayback machine not long ago here on FR. Great movie!

Vincent Price does a great job with his acting skills and talent.

They couldn’t.
They’d get sued for running electric wires into the theater seating for effect like they did when The Tingler first came out.

Did Chris Matthews star in that film?

Thanks, I'm watching it. It was The Omega Man I recall the most. The zombies were intelligent, but that didn't stop Heston from grabbing the ol' high-power rifle and using them for target practice.

That was a great role for Anthony Zerbe too. Freaky. By the way, if I was the last man still alive and unzombified, I'd be talking to myself a lot. I do that anyway:)

Read I Am Legend, by Richard Matheson, the source material for The Omega Man as well as The Last Man on Earth. It’s an amazing book.

Kinda liked “World War Z” until it sorta petered out at the end, but the first hour or so is pretty good.

I kinda liked it too, better than the initial reviews. The book was very good.

I thought the wild action scenes were the film’s strength; when the two travellers finally arrive at the Welsh(?) clinic, things slowed and the movie went downhill after that, IMO.

I remain a big fan of the original George Romero flick.

That movie is a classic. I am having a bad withdrawl of TWD so today on Fearnet, they are showing FIDO which is a funny movie about using zombies as servants lol.

The king of the "B Movies"? Absolutely.

It's also got a great soundtrack, if you can find a copy. Probably have to download a torrent file; the CD copies are bringing $$$ at auction sites. Everyone needs a copy in their car stereo, for when the zombie apocalypse hits.
