I wondered about the “diversity” of a cruise ship crew. Most people in the world DO NOT associate cleanliness as a prerequisite to health. To most of the world’s people disease is caused by spirits or unknown forces. It is only Western man and those under his influence(the Japanese)that hold to the “Germ Theory”(Fact!). Washing ones hands is a nuisance garbage and trash management a burden. My niece saw a person in an Asian country do his business on the public streets, wipe with his hand and then wipe the material on a nearby wall. “Our Diversity is our strength.” God help us.

Try a floating landfill. They can’t just dump the garbage overboard.

Interesting point. Airlines fly people in sealed containers. My last daughter ended up positive on her TB test. She had traveled extensively by air at or near the time of the test. We always wondered why she became positive as we watched her health every second of her life with us. We always associated the air travel with the result.

Thanks for the interesting “Stats.” However, given the mean, median and modes what if you are the guy that drowns in a river whose average depth is six inches; you found the twelve foot hole?

I’ve been on 8 cruises since 2004 and I’ve never been sick. Cleanliness and sanitation efforts were always going on.

IMO, the reason a norovirus outbreak happens is there is at least one person with a gastro bug that won’t stay home. They get on the ship, surf the buffets, touch railings and generally don’t keep themselves isolated until they are well. Cruise lines even have a question on the check-in form about recent stomach viruses. Some people just lie about it.

I think my point was that given over 20 millin people cruise a year the % of illness is very small.

You may he right. I also think that some passengers don’t practice good hygiene. Ever watch women in the ladies room? I’ve seen some do their business, then leave without washing their hands. A few minutes later I see them in the buffet line handling the serving spoons. Yuck!

I am sorry to be so tardy. We are expecting guests today, so I have been busy spiffing up the place...you know what I mean.

Anyway, I agree that the chances of getting ill on a cruise are pretty small, and from what I understand, cruises are an excellent way to relax, eat heartily and visit other lands. It’s just that with me, having to deal with the TSA is completely unacceptable. I will not, unless there are terribly extenuating circumstances (which I cannot imagine), be subject to their man-handling and stupid bureaucratic rules. I guess I’m just too rigid in my thinking, but, hey, it comes with age!
