Gassy Cows Are Warming The Planet, And They're Here To Stay

An earlier version of this story said that the methane emissions associated with livestock come from their farts. In fact, most of those methane emissions come from belches.

Sorry to ruin your appetite, but it's time to talk about cow belches.

Humans the world over are eating meat and drinking milk — some of us a little less, some of us a lot more, than years past. Farmers are bringing more and more cows into the world to meet demand, and with them escapes more methane into the atmosphere.

In 2011, methane from livestock accounted for 39 percent of all the greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture, according to a report that United Nation's Food and Agriculture Organization released Friday. That's more than synthetic fertilizer or deforestation. Methane from livestock rose 11 percent between 2001 and 2011.

Those emissions, combined with emissions from all the other sectors of food production, aren't likely to go down anytime soon. Greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture, forestry and fishing have doubled over the past 50 years, according to the report. Emissions could go up by 30 percent by 2050.

Burn the methane off as it is expelled?

What about people gas? I am certain Moochelle emits some after her many vacations.

Let's do some math. There are 7 billion humans on the face of the earth. Each give off roughly 3 liters of methane a day according to a Canadian study.

There aren't 7 billion cattle, or any where close to that number on the earth. So, by multiplying the 3 liters by 7 billion, that gives one a good idea of the amount of gas humans give off.

But one must account for the added gas given off by politicians and some educated fools.

Many greens love animals and hate humans. They want as many humans eliminated as possible “to save the planet.” But here’s their quandary....animals release gas too. More animals means more gas released. So if they were staying true to their love of the planet over mammals, they would demand the slaughter of millions of animals.

But it's only the humans' effects that matter in their equation, so I doubt if that it is actually a quandary to them. Animals could release all the gas their little hearts desired and it wouldn't matter a whit, if all the humans were gone.

Maybe they can create a cow that farts helium, it would save the planet and make ranchers talk funny at the same time. And rodeos would be hilarious.

Typical leftists, that don't know which end of the cow is which. Your taxes support these twits, end NPR now.

Ooh, ooh, like on a BBQ grill! The action of the cow flipping it’s tail ignites a Piezo spark which burns off the methane?
I smell, um, a federal grant!

600 million dollars later:
“Well, we fed Test Subject Z a crate of cabbage and sewed prototype X1BVII to her ahhh ....

“Rectum?”

“It nearly killed her.”

I would think all the methane emissions could escape into space through the hole in the ozone.

More hogwash from NPR. Ranchers are bringing more and more cattle into the world? Cattle herds in the US alone are down to 1950s level!! Where’s the increase?
