Black Bear Mauls Florida Woman, Drags Her Out of Garage
Yahoo/Good Morning America ^ | 4-13-14 | LIZ FIELDS

Posted on 04/13/2014 8:17:48 PM PDT by kingattax

The hunt is on today for a black bear who mauled a woman at her home in an upscale central Florida neighborhood, leaving her with injuries to her face, legs and torso and requiring her to get 40 stitches to the head.

Terri Frana of Lake Mary, Fla., went to her garage Saturday evening to grab bicycles for her children to ride down to their neighbor's house when the attack happened, according to her husband, Frank Frana.

As soon as the children left, Frana, 45, saw two bears in the driveway. She walked to the patio area where there were five bears eating trash that they had pulled out of the garage, her husband said.

"The bear got up on [its] hind legs and started to maul her, opened its jaws and put her head in the mouth and dragged her towards the woods," Frank Frana said. "Somehow she was able to pull herself out."

There are two things I never want to see in my backyard...a bear or an alligator. Looks like Florida residents deal with both.

As crazy as things get here...I think I’ll just stay put!

” - - - “The bears were various sizes so we think it’s probably cubs of different maturity and perhaps a mama bear,” the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office told ABC News. - - - “

Yup: beware of Mama Bears.

Dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb thing to do. Did she think they were tame or something?

There was an article in “Outdoor Life” a few years ago about bear attacks. Black bears kill more people than any other type and it is not even close.

Part of the reason is they are more closely located to large human populations and the other is people don’t realize just how deadly they can be.

Aw, come on, where else can you shop for a rug and luggage in your backyard?

I'm wondering how much disney she had to watch on how to act around and towards bears.

People like her feed the bears or put their garbage out so the bears can get into it and then they wonder why they have a bear problem. I was raised in the mountains around black bears and have never, not even one time, had a problem with a wild black bear.

Garbage bears are always going to be a problem and must be destroyed.

Animal problems are almost always the results of stupid people. For these bears it is too late. Either now or later they will have to be killed.

There was a show set in Florida called “Gentle Ben” and I think that was a black bear. Dennis Weaver I believe was in the show as well.

Ya, it’s true, we were just discussing that up here in Grande Prairie. Most direct encounters with grizzlies don’t go well, it’s just more common to run into the blacks.

I don’t know what kind of bear it was but Ripley’s Believe it or not, the old feature in newspapers, not the TV show reported a woman once outran a bear, throwing clothes off which the bear at each little turn would stop and smell. At least that’s what Ripley’s Believe it not wrote.

This story yes, is a negative towards bears but about 9 months there was that bear in Pa. who had a jar stuck around his head and these people freed it.

Just yesterday here, seems there was a story on a Florida Panther that attacked someone or something like that.

I saw lizards crawling up a window screen in Florida, and that was enough for me to decide never even to consider living there. That alligator just confirms my opinion. I’ll stay in N.Dakota. A moose walks down Main Street every few years, but that’s it.

I lived in Florida for a few years...in an area much like Lake Mary. Even though there are bears there, it is not common to see them, especially in a populated subdivision.

However, this is surely from all the non-stop subdivision building they do there. It’s just one after the other there. Bears gotta go somewhere. Like all the other animals. Tho the article didn’t express that she “intentionally” went to the back patio to SEE bears, they happened to be there upon her arrival, intruding on their feed. This could’ve happened to anyone. Including you. Animal problems are almost always the results of people, stupid or otherwise. So, people & animals have a real problem, don’t they. Animals don’t care if you “know” what they are all about or not.

Having never had a problem with a bear, I would say, makes you “fortunate”.

What I said is that I have never had a problem with a wild bear. I did not say I had never had a bear problem. I was born and raised on a big ranch not far from Lassen National Park and there are plenty of flatlander/city slicker spoiled black bears around that ranch. They just do not last long. After they learn that there is an easier way to get food from people and people things they never stop. If they can't find the garbage cans or an open dump they will break into cabins and houses. Or better yet they will start killing calves and colts. They even used to bring the problem bears up from Yosemite to our area and turn them loose.

We didn't create the problem but we solved the problems every time we found one.

This ladies attitude about bears is clear. She walked out into the middle of them. She was plumb disney trained. The only way to solve that bear problem now is to kill the bears.

If they transplant them they will just cause someone else problems and sooner or later someone will have to kill them.

Keep up the disney work, we really don't mind taking care of the garbage, the garbage bears that is.....

And no I really do not have to live with the problems that someone else has created......

On the local Panama City news, I am looking at a Black Bear right now. It is in a large tree and appears to be a large one. They are estimating it’s weight at 300 lbs.

The fish and wildlife people just got on scene with a tranquilizer gun. It is in Springfield which is a suburb of Panama City.

Do a bit of research, the lady was looking for her young kids at the time,

The stupid cliff in this story gets taller with each rendition. So she had kids, knew the bears were around, and did nothing about them. There is not much I can say about this that can be printed. Stupid is just where this attitude starts and it gets much worse from there.

There is no defense for this absolute disregard for her children's safety. I guess Disney wins when her kids become bear dinner but until that time she scores points using them as bear bait.

Does she also keep rattle snakes in the kids bathtub? This woman, mother, has no contact with reality. She and reality do not even speak the same language.

I get it very well. People create problem bears then the bears must be destroyed.

This lady was not only a part of creating the problem bears she then, very recklessly, stupidly, and irresponsibly, lost track of her child/children in the middle of the potentially lethal situation she helped create.

What is it you don't think I get?? From hunting behind dogs with a rifle, spot and stalk archery hunting, or handgun hunting and with many depredation permits I've had a lot of one on one experience with bears.

Truly wild bears are never a problem but the garbage bears that ignorant people create will always have to be killed.

It is not complicated at all. This is not Disney land.

What I meant when I said “fortunate”, was being roughed up by a bear...NOT having a bear problem(in that they are in your garbage).

I realize there are people who do not practice wildlife etiquette, and Yes, shame on them....but bears don’t need humans to seek out easier ways to find food. And by you having solved some problems, it was because you were living with the problems others created.

And LOL, don’t blame Disney...because let’s not forget to include the ones who live in the mountains who too, encounter the same demise. I didn’t grow up a “flatlander”(as you say)even though I spent time in Florida. And in the mountains where I live, we understand what transplanted bears create but, I can tell you there are plenty of “mountain folk” who do the same stupid things(IF, that’s what the woman did. I wasn’t there). Needless to say...some live to tell about it, some don’t.

Flatlander is not synonymous with ‘city-slicker’. And stupidity is not a geographical location.
