Lawmakers in Moldova's pro-Russian breakaway region of Transdniestr on Wednesday passed a resolution calling on Moscow and the United Nations to recognise its independence.
Transdniestr, a strip of land bordering Ukraine, broke away from Romanian-speaking Moldova following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
Some analysts suspect Russia is eyeing the territory, which consists mostly of Russian speakers, in the wake of last month's annexation of Crimea.
The resolution adopted unanimously by Transdniestr's self-appointed parliament on Wednesday called on the international community to recognise the region as a "sovereign independent state".
"According to the universally recognised norms of international law, a right of people to self-determination should be the basis of political decisions. Every state should respect this right," said deputy speaker Sergei Cheban.
Residents in the region, which has never been recognised as an independent state by any United Nations member, voted overwhelmingly to join Russia in a 2006 referendum.

In summary, a nation bordering Russia is being chased by the European Union for closer association... a region in that nation is extremely populated by a pro-Russian citizenry and they are seeking independence and closer association with Russia... 'activists' are taking action in the region's capital... the government is deloring the "direct defiance" - how dare people have free will? And a neighboring nation is worried of the consequences...
Ring any bells?
This is almost sounding like the muslim dogma of “If a muslim sets foot on it, it belongs to islam”................
I find it interesting that in your graphic, the silhouette of a Tiger I is used in the “Free Parking” spot...
Ha! I noticed the exact same thing.
Where is Bruce Willis and Jon Malkovich when you need them? (RED-first one)
this is the most awkward shape for a breakaway region in history.

Moscow ... has also announced its right to intervene militarily across the former Soviet Union to protect Russian speakers, a new doctrine that has overturned decades of post-Cold War diplomacy.

This is nothing new. I was in Moldova 6 or 7 years ago and this was an issue then. The Russian minority is really poor and ignored by the Moldovans, and the Rom operate separately and basically view themselves as stateless.
I especially like how Russia let the Chechens have a referendum on their alignment with Russia status, just like the Crimea.
The Putin Standard has Mexico eyeing California.
If given the chance, do you think all those legal AND illegal aliens from Mexico would vote to re-join Mexico?..................
Obama is working hard at erasing the Southern border such that we would be lucky to only lose California. More likely, the Obama invited invaders will end up with the whole country.
Dzhugashvili’s gift to Russia.
All Putin is doing is to update the old “Brezhnev Doctrine” which allowed the Soviet Union to come to the defense of any “socialist country” with which they had relations, no matter were they were located. This was specifically aimed at providing arms and protect to Castro’s Cuba, Czechoslovakia during its “Velvet Revolution”, and other marxist states, esp. North Vietnam, the Pathet Lao in Laos, and in theory, later on, the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia via Prince Sihanouk.
I’ll bet you haven’t seen this concept mentioned in any mainstream newspaper or on TV.

If it turns out that parts of Moldova decide to break away from Moldova and become integrated with Russia (however they decide to do this), then that will put an end to the votes that Catalonia and Scotland had planned.
We just can’t have anything like that - for any of the three!
It’s that integrity thing and all...
