New York University’s controversial penchant under President John Sexton for doling out real-estate perks to top professors and executives also extended to his son.
Jed Sexton, whose sole affiliation with NYU was his status as the president’s son, for years enjoyed a spacious faculty apartment while the university experienced a “severe” housing shortage, The Post has learned. In spring 2002, NYU ordered that a pair of one-bedroom apartments normally reserved for law school faculty be combined into a lavish, two-story spread in the heart of Greenwich Village, property records show.
The Harvard-educated Sexton, who was a 33-year-old aspiring actor at the time, shared the new duplex with his newlywed wife, Danielle Decrette, for the next five years, according to documents and people briefed on the situation.

I found only one political contribution for a John Sexton in NY during the 2010, 2012, and 2014 election cycles, a $1,000 contribution to U.S. Congressman Timothy H. Bishop (D-NY).
He still serves as President of NYU.
From January 1, 2003 to January 1, 2007, he was the Chairman of the Board of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York; in 2006, he served as chair of the Federal Reserve System's Council of Chairs.

I’ll take that as a no.
I’m not at all aware of the political background here, so may be taking a chance with this statement.
But this seems clearly illegal.
It certainly isn’t right.
It seems like the more wealthy, privileged and powerful an elite family is, the more they feel entitled to freebies.

I don’t know that it’s illegal, but it should be taxable as income. Oh, and with back penalties. But given the current political state of state and federal taxes, he’ll probably never see an audit.
Per the article, FMV for one-bedroom student apartments was $3k+/month. The faculty apartments are nicer, and this was a renovated duplex.
This is how liberals (read:authoritarians)think. They can steal from you and justify it in their own pea minds as they’re “special” and “enlightened”.
Maybe this “good” doctor will enjoy his free accommodations—in jail.
I’m making that statement based on the conclusion (perhaps wrong) that the apartment wasn’t paid for.
If it was paid for, and a fair rent, then is was improper.
If it wasn’t paid for, at a fair rent, it would seem to this poster to be illegal.
However I am not legal expert, so that is just my opinion.

Interesting you should say that because, doing the math, it appears that 7 years have passed since he moved out.

I’m actually acquainted with John Sexton. While working on his PhD in religion at Fordham he taught a section of Frosh Theology, That was my section. he was a cool guy to have, being maybe five years older than us. When he was an undergrad he was suspended from his dorm for some satirical artwork he painted on the wall of his suite. He was a great debate coach and his girls from St. Brendans in Brooklyn consistently won national champioships. When I had him in the 60s, he was liberal, but most of us were. What he is now I couldn’t say, but he has a lot of respect from Fordham alums across the political spectrum. There has been a continuous movement to unseat him by the neighborhood community organizers and leftwing NYU profs because of his efforts to constantly expand NYU’s geographic footprint. I kind of oppose him on this as well. Urban colleges with large endowments and large hospital centers can spread across a community like a cancerous tumor. The building my mom grew up in on 18th street between 1st and 2nd avenues is now an NYU dorm. It’s 1.5 miles and a long walk or two buses from the Washington Square campus. So I understand the neighbor’s attitudes. Some of the revelations about Sexton are the result of efforts by his adversaries to dig up any dirt from his past. So here it’s a liberal being hunted by modern progs. For conservatives it’s a popcorn eating event.

Hmmm. I wonder what the statute of limitations is/was . . .
I don’the disagree at all, but thought a slightly different viewpoint could add to the discussion. On another site Sexton is being compared to CUNY’s 25K tenured position offered to the obnoxious Krug man and he doesn’t even see a student for a year.
