OTTAWA – Russian actions against Ukraine are “aggressive, militaristic and imperialistic” and pose a grave threat to world peace, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said today.
Pro-Russian groups have occupied buildings in 10 cities in eastern Ukraine in recent days, prompting Harper to use his harshest words yet against what he called “Russian provocateurs sent by the Putin regime.”
It’s time to rally the world against the danger posed by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Harper said at a hastily assembled photo-op event with ambassadors from Ukraine, Estonia, Poland and Latvia.
“I know this is of great concern to our NATO allies in the region, but it should be a great concern to all of us,” Harper said.
“When a major power acts in a way that is so clearly aggressive, militaristic and imperialistic, this represents a significant threat to the peace and stability of the world and it’s time we all recognized the depth and the seriousness of that threat.”
He said he’s dispatching Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird to talk with allies in eastern Europe. Baird will then head on to the Middle East.Baird echoed the prime minister in blaming Russia for the latest events, scoffing: “I don’t know who the Russian federation thinks it’s kidding when it tries to pretend that it has nothing to do with them.”
“There are very clear and disconcerting parallels between what is happening in eastern Ukraine and events leading up to Russia’s illegal invasion and annexation of Crimea,” Baird continued, urging Russia to back down.
Canada is prepared to impose stronger sanctions against Putin’s regime, Harper said.
“But as I say, the most important thing we need to do is to rally all of our allies throughout the western world and throughout the greater global community to understand that peace and stability is being threatened here in a way that has not been threatened since the end of the Cold War.”
Putin is fighting history and will lose, he added.
“We also know from history that anybody who makes it their historical mission to turn the clock back, as Mr. Putin has determined to do, that those kinds of missions always fail in the end. But we will do all in our power to make it fail.”
Harper also paid tribute to the people of Ukraine, saying their determination to secure their freedom and independence has no limit.
Well, they did... the whole current crisis started from that.

Obama would not commit to defending Canada without taking over Canada himself, and populating it with South Americans.

Harper is feeling threatened by Russia, as all Canadians should be. Obama is abandoning all the traditional allies of the USA, including Canada, Israel , Japan and Taiwan, as neocolonially exploited countries that need to go it alone so that Obama can give the money saved to his Community Organizers.
Russia has a permanant standing army of 2 brigades operating permanantly in Russia’s far North. Canada’s Artic is an open invitation, with NO defence. Harper was not responsible for the poofter security assessment on Russia, the socialist libs and NDP civil servants were.HORRIBLE!
It was used to NOT spend money on expanding the CAF.

But budgetarily Harper is between a rock and a hard place. He needs a whole division of Canadian troops in the Northern reaches of the Canadian Arctic, permanently based there, with a year round air base.
And Harper cannot afford to do that.So he has to talk big while carrying a very small stuck.
I am all for giving Harper a bigger stick, just drop the stupid bi-lingual policy of the CAF and use the money saved to build an FOB in the far North.
6 CF -18s in Poland? We need them in Quttinirpaaq National Park on the Northernmost tip of Ellesmere Island, but there is no way for them to land and operate there.All we have there is a seasonal station for greenie weenie federal civil servants who think they are Farley Mowat, to count the Puffin population. Harper will soon have to do something about that or he is toast, Putin will ream him a new ash haole, setting up a Russian FOB on Ellesmere Island before Harper and his opposition socialists can finish licking their arctic popsicles.The world just changed.

social program give aways as “peace dividends.” Putin has effed the West royally for at least 3 years.By the end of 3 years Putin will have all the portions of Ukraine he wants, with or without bloodshed.
All NATO can accomplish is to keep Pooty from rolling into Estonia and Poland.

America is out fueled and out gunned by Russia in any European operation.
RIGHT NOW there cannot be air superiority by the USA in the Ukraine. It will take years, and the Ukraine does not have years, only months or weeks.
