This Earth Day, Tuesday, April 22, three former NASA astronauts will present new evidence that our planet has experienced many more large-scale asteroid impacts over the past decade than previously thought… three to ten times more, in fact. A new visualization of data from a nuclear weapons warning network, to be unveiled by B612 Foundation CEO Ed Lu during the evening event at Seattle's Museum of Flight, shows that "the only thing preventing a catastrophe from a 'city-killer' sized asteroid is blind luck."

They didn't even notice where a large airliner went to which was packed with nearly 250 people, with all the latest tracking technology.
BTW we've had several NEO's in the past decades and never saw them until they passed us.
If you want a city-killing impact it’s unfortunate.
Inhabitants of the city in question are likely to have a different opinion.

Those are not impacts. You don’t get as much grant money by studying misses. You get more money by claiming that the sky is falling, has already fallen and people didn’t know it, and that it will fall more often in the future.
Scientists should not be carnival barkers.
Correct, near earth objects (NEO's) are certainly not impacts.
My point was if we have difficulty tracking or even detecting them until after they pass the earth, then the chances of detecting every one impacting the earth, especially ocean impacts, would seem unlikely.
Same point regarding the Malaysian airliner which they couldn't even determine where it went to, and it was packed with nearly 250 people, with all the latest tracking technology.

Airplanes don’t strike the earth with the force of an atomic bomb.
Go back and read the OP instead of trying to punch a hole in my statements. I’m not saying that meteors don’t exist or that they can’t hit earth. I’m talking about the prostitution of science as a means of stealing from taxpayers.
I never suggested or implied they did.

There are lots of people who have made incredible discoveries and contributions (amateur astronomers) who were not paid a dime.

Raising taxes and putting the UN in charge is hardly a sane idea. IMHO.
Don’t confuse radar tracking capabilities with our ability to detect explosions through the nuclear detection network.

That is the point of the whole article. They inflate a problem by making it seem like an imminent threat and brag about some expensive boondoggle to help study the threat.
It usually helps to read the article.

Then why are you comparing a missing airliner to a “large-scale meteor impact”? I’m pointing out the huge difference in scale that makes the two incomparable.
Its like saying that “man-eating tigers represent a huge threat to the human race” and then saying that tigers and bunnies are mammals and there are millions of bunnies living near people.

How have they inflated the threat?
Obviously a very large impact is going to be detected especially if it's a land impact.
Let me clarify. I would guess their nuclear detection network fails to detect many impacts which have the potential of being quite destructive if they impacted populated areas. Especially if these are ocean impacts.
I guess I didn’t do a good job of communicating satire.
To be honest, it is real imminent threat...This planet will again be struck by a substantial object. The only question is when. Might be tomorrow, might happen in 200 years...
