GOP making bold play for US Senate seat in Oregon

The GOP is making a bold play for a U.S. Senate seat in reliably Democratic Oregon, where a Republican hasn’t been elected to a statewide office in more than a decade.

Republicans back in Washington think they’ve found the right candidate in Monica Wehby, a children’s brain surgeon who’s raised more than $1 million and put her early opposition to President Barack Obama’s health care law at the center of her campaign. […]

Wehby faces four other Republicans, most notably state Rep. Jason Conger of Bend, a lawyer who’s promoting his conservative credentials and his experience representing a district that, like the state as a whole, favors Democrats. …

Conger has virtually declared war on Lars Larson, who is easily one the most popular conservative radio hosts with a three hour regional and a three hour national show five days a week.

Lars Larson asked Conger questions about his law firm making money off of the Oregon version of obamacare, which he voted for. Conger cannot seam to get around to answering the question.

If you’re a conservative in Oregon and cannot get Lars Larson on your side, you are toast. Fighting Lars Larson doomed his campaign, IMHO, the day he declared that he would never go on Lars’ show ever again.

Conger also voted for the Columbia River Crossing bridge that included light rail and would actually reduce the volume of cars that could use it and create a huge toll for users.

Conger also voted for a convention center in Portland that would never make money and would compete with the private sector.

I know Jason Conger and like him a lot. He lives in my district. His voting record leaves a lot to be desired if you are a serious conservative, as I am.

As for him being slightly more against abortion that Wehby is will not matter unless you think the republicans are going to run on repealing Roe v. Wade.

Conger is right on gun control and abortion. I think Wehby is also. She’s going to have at least five times the money to finance her campaign as Conger. I predict Wehby will win the nomination going away.

I like Conger but I wouldn’t mind Wehby. OK, she is for abortion and gay marriage, but would you rather have a Marxist who’ll be 100% support of Obama or Wehby would will check Obama on major issues.

It’s simple: Wehby is the liberal establishment candidate, and Conger isn’t. Conger does better in polling against Merkley. The RINO Establishment perpetually backs losers in Senate races. They cost us more than 10 seats alone in the past two cycles.

If you want to be a single issue voter, it's OK. However, if a conservative candidate (of ANY party) is on my page 90% of the time, I would support him.

That means that some issues I won't compromise on, which includes states rights, taxes and gun rights. Other issues is not going to make me let a Marxist in just because a candidate is not 100% on the litmus test.

If you are going to stay home because candidate X is not 100% conservative, you are going to let Candidate Y who would agree with Obama 100% of the time win?

I'm going to vote for the most conservative candidate. That means if they a different view on abortion or gay marriage, but the same views as me on issues I mostly care about, I'll vote for them.

I still want to defeat Liberals and RINOs...

I’m anxious to hear what Impy has to say about this race.

Really? Well.

Merkley was elected in 2008 with 49%, if everyone who voted for the Constitution party candidate had voted for incumbent Republican Gordon Smith, he'd have been reelected. Smith I would say, is to this lady's right. I supported his reelection but he did invite a challenge from the right by drifting further to the left and praising Obama in attempt to appeal to swing voters. Pathetic election, Merkley was a border-line second tier candidate. Smith was preferable to the pair of RINO Senators OR used to have, Hatfield and Packwood.

Anyway, Dr. Wehby been getting a great deal of hype, I'm always skeptical of hype-heavy candidates, tea party and RINO alike.

She kind of reminds me in that sense of Dr. Steve Sauerberg, the candidate that IL RINOs recruited to run against Durbin in 2008. The difference of course is that no one outside the state took his candidacy seriously because beating Durbin in 2008 was an impossibility and indeed Durbin handed him his ass (the guy was a lousy candidate, he won the primary with only 56% against 2 pathetic opponents).

Unlike that race, this race is winnable, more Republican state, much more Republican year, less entrenched rat. But I have to say I'm not optimistic. Of all the winnable races this one is dead last, other than maybe Virginia.

In addition to being pro-choice she's given the typical vague answers that RINOs who have never run for office before give on shamnesty and gay marriage. I presume she's for both but is reluctant to say so and piss off conservatives, or she doesn't give a damn and is afraid of taking a conservative position.

Very troubling was her stance on Obamacare, that repealing it is impossible so let's "revamp" it change it to the watered-down version that a President McCain would have passed. Finally realizing that Obamacare is THE issue of this election she's flipped flopped and is speaking strongly against it. I don't think she knows what the hell she is doing.

Conger seems a decent candidate, an elected official, not some random person. She has way more money than him though, and Wyden has a great deal more than she does. We'd need big bucks to beat him.m not optimistic. Of all the winnable races this one is dead last, other than maybe Virginia.

I will not support a pro-abortion candidate. Period. Compromise with evil is still evil.

A poll showed

Merkley 47% Conger 40%
Merkley 46% Wehby 34%

Wehby is being pushed (and funded) by the Rovians. She’s a pro-abort, and her candidacy should be aborted. Conger may not win, but he has a better shot than this Susan Collins wannabe.

Thanks for the insight on the OR race.

As to “Really? Well” I can’t resist reminding you that, as our Designated Chief Election Guru, you have certain responsibilities that I am sure you are aware of. Without our regular dose of Impy-Wisdom come election-time life just wouldn’t be worth living.

OK. Perhaps I exaggerate a bit but hopefully you get my point. So I would like to recommend you pull out that Ping List of yours, put me on it if it’s not already there and start feeding us the real dope.

Sincerely, IP

So if a candidate is true to cutting taxes, gun rights, repealing Obamacare and to close the border to illegals, but his position on abortion is pro choice and another candidate is 100% with Obama you won't vote? Sorry, but to me abortion and gay marriage is #30 on my list. This year, if the candidate is for getting rid of illegals and to repeal Obamacare, I don't care care if he is pro choice or for gay marriage.

I am not going to vote for Marxists or RINOs.

Being pro-abortion is, at minimum, a severe character flaw.

The bottom line for those of you who don’t have a problem with the slaughter of the unborn: every single time we elect one of these pro-abortion “Republicans,” they turn out to be soft on taxes, spending, guns, etc., etc.

That figures, the voters are never as fond of these “electable” RINO recruits as the party bosses and talking heads are.

But it shows Rove’s hypocrisy.

“We need strong, experienced candidates instead of outsiders who’ve never been in politics, otherwise we lose”

And so he backs an outsider who has never been in politics over an established politician. It’s not about electability with Rove. That’s where he is exposed as a BS contortionist. He wants RINOs. PERIOD.

Rove is an a-hole but his PAC has backed plenty of candidates that aren't RINOs. I can't go along with Rove's support=automatic mark of the beast thing.

I think perceived electablilty is a primary factor in who he chooses to support.

In this case he and the other chumps that are backing Wehby ascribe to the falsehood that only a "moderate" can win in Oregon, even if she has no freaking idea how to run a campaign. I attribute that more to stupidity than anything else.

Also mentioned in that poll you posted, rat Governor Kitzhaber leads his main challenger, State Rep. Dennis Richardson by only 46%-43%. We haven’t won that Governorship since 1982, only Washington (last win that wasn’t recounted away was in 1980) has gone longer without a Republican Governor.

If you are going to stay home because candidate X is not 100% conservative

Everyone stays home in Oregon, all ballots are by mail. Fraud Free too. :)

I don’t know where you derive “single issue” from my post. I said electing RINOs does nothing to combat the Democrat agenda. All they do is further it and continue to inflict damage on the Conservative agenda and the GOP. If you want to “defeat” liberals/RINOs, you don’t vote for them.
