Ashley, Leslie, there are a bunch of them.

I think they all started as surnames, then were used as male first names long before they were used for girls. In the south they are still traditionally used for males even though the rest of the country may find it silly or confusing. I bet we’ll be seeing them used as male names less and less as time goes on.

Curiously, there’s only been one “Ashley” (first name) ever elected to Congress. A male from Western Massachusetts who served from 1893-97 (Ashley Bascom Wright).
