A Defiant Rancher Savors the Audience That Rallied to His Side
NYT ^ | 4/23/14 | Adam Nagourney

BUNKERVILLE, Nev. — Cliven Bundy stood by the Virgin River up the road from the armed checkpoint at the driveway of his ranch, signing autographs and posing for pictures. For 55 minutes, Mr. Bundy held forth to a clutch of supporters about his views on the troubled state of America — the overreaching federal government, the harassment of Western ranchers, the societal upheaval caused by abortion, even musing about whether slavery was so bad.

** snip **

“I want to tell you one more thing I know about the Negro,” he said. Mr. Bundy recalled driving past a public-housing project in North Las Vegas, “and in front of that government house the door was usually open and the older people and the kids — and there is always at least a half a dozen people sitting on the porch — they didn’t have nothing to do. They didn’t have nothing for their kids to do. They didn’t have nothing for their young girls to do.

“And because they were basically on government subsidy, so now what do they do?” he asked. “They abort their young children, they put their young men in jail, because they never learned how to pick cotton. And I’ve often wondered, are they better off as slaves, picking cotton and having a family life and doing things, or are they better off under government subsidy? They didn’t get no more freedom. They got less freedom.”

I wonder what those percentages are on this board. I can see this thread turning into a powder keg.

I dunno, I hope most people here are smart enough to know you can't say idiotic things like this. These are sort of the ramblings of an old guy from an older generation. His heart may be in the right place, but these statements will alienate pretty much everyone. Every smart conservative will understand they can't be associated with this sort of thing and run as far away as possible. You just can't go around babbling about how the negro might be better off learning to pick cotton.

The real problem here is too many conservatives, through their support, allowed Bundy to become something of the face of the Western land battle. Now that public face is completely tainted by comments like this, which does serious damage to the broader issue for our side. Worse, assuming these are Bundy's real statements, they will serve to vindicate slimeball Harry Reid on this issue in much of the court of public opinion.

Folks should have looked much harder at this guy before throwing their support behind him.

Does the first sentence in this smear give you a freaking clue that this is a chopped up, out of context, hit piece?

It is pretty obvious by the “I want to tell you one MORE thing...”!

“Guys if you have the cameras rolling, keep in mind that your language and behavior is going to sway people’s opinions. It is early and perceptions are everything right now. Please, all you Patriots out there keep your cool when standing your ground.” TheArizona 4/10/2014

Precisely. AA has a maxim “principles, not personalities.” That works well across most of life.

” this is a needless self “

Why would you call Bundy a needless self?

See how that works when you chop thing up and take it out of context? That is exactly what the NYT did here.

Read the first sentence again carefully.

Give us ANY possible context that would make his statement acceptable? I’ll wait here.

All I can say is, if he was misquoted and there is some way to prove it, the NYT is through.

Through.

Is there any way we can get a consultant out to these folks before they start talking about ‘legitimate rape’ and ‘the Negro’?

LOL, yeah, seriously. Some conservative group needs to focus exclusively on getting "language consultants" out to every single Republican candidate, conservative icon, rising right of center star, etc. This consultant will simply remind them to never, ever talk about legitimate rape (or rape at all if it can be avoided), anything to do with the body magically preventing pregnancy, the word "negro" at all, especially the word "negro" and "picking cotton" in the same sentence, etc, etc.

What was the conversation about? Did the reporter ask a bunch of questions about pre-civil war slavery?

It’s obvious that there was much more to the conversation.

Glenn Beck today basically called Bundy a psycho... And when the Feds come and stick a machine gun in your face threaten your family and sick dogs on you.... bend over and take like a man. That an armed response to anything is not the answer...(Said the man with a ccw and gun collection and armed body guards.)

If the NYT didn’t get it on tape, it’s deniable. I really can’t see anyone other than a halfwit making a statement like that to a reporter.

Did the reporter ask a bunch of questions about pre-civil war slavery?

Even if he did, so what? The disintegration of the black family has nothing to do with slavery. The causes are much more recent.

Yep, Racism is the worst possible crime one can commit in today’s America.

You could murder 20 people in cold blood, and people will forgive you....But say something that could be construed as racist, and you can forget it.

It makes a difference if the only part of a long conversation they print was something that related to the first part.

Liberals do this all the time, and I’d be willing to bet that the NYT sent the reporter out there with orders to do exactly that.

Something to consider:

Cliven Bundy was not selected as the most politically correct stand to make. He was defaulted to as an emergent opportunity to forestall the momentum of the Leviathan.

My neighbor may be a hate-driven racist KKK member who worships Satan and makes a living as an Obamacare navigator and by night runs a Cloward-Piven advocacy group. I still don't want Federal agents storming his house and training snipers on his family and setting up "First Amendment zones" around the corner and performing other acts of disgusting nasty foul and vicious tyranny in order for a corrupt Senator to profit and the ruling class to be amused at more entertaining citizen blood...

...with unpaid cow snack fees as justification.

I don't think his dog should be shot either.

"Bundy is now being slammed by the left for being a racist"

If the quote is accurate, it sounds racist to me. I'm not even on the edge of wonderin' if it was racist.

To compare enslavement, not in the metaphorical sense, but real sold-on-the-block slavery with welfare dependency is ludicrous.

Especially with spiced with reference to picking cotton. Do they even grow cotton in Nevada?

Glenn Beck is a self-aggrandizing idiot...I wrote him off years ago and was pilloried on this forum for saying so.

Let’s wait and see how this plays out.

Reid really drew a bead on this guy, for the last week or so. Could be Read know of this ahead of time, in which case it would be warranted criticism.

If however the NTY stepped into this with a made-up quote, we should get (very) in their face.

One or the other. I don’t think we know the facts completely yet.
