Spring seems to be taking forever to arrive, but we are not really seeing the worst of the late spring.
The Great Lakes, and Lake Superior is holding on to their ice. As a result the freighters that normally travel the Great Lakes are having their fair share of problems. This has been a very long winter season, beginning with the Great Lakes freezing on December 6th, not allowing Northwest Indiana steel mills to stockpile materials. Glen Nekvasil, vice president for Lake Carriers' Association explained that lake freighters are struggling to make the voyage across Lake Superior despite the thick shelf ice and windrows of up to 14-feet-tall. Those delays caused Gary Works to run at reduced capacity. "This is the worst winter since 1993 or 1994," Nekvasil said. "The last time ice breakers were out this late in the season convoying vessles was 1996. It's been a very brutal winter."
Closer to home, Essar Steel is receiving freighter shipments of coal from the south, however iron ore from Duluth/Superior are being delayed. Essar Steel is receiving ore via rail.

Wawa is a great little Ontario town. Last time I landed there, it had enough saloons and whisky to keep me happy. The part I didn’t like was constantly stopping the car to roll boulders off the road. It’s a real northern thing in that part of the world, hey?
I remember flying over the Mississippi during the early 90’s when there was severe flooding. The river was swollen out of its banks and flooding was extensive.
Is this going to another severe flood year?
There were some flooding issues in Southeastern Ontario last week due to the higher than normal snowfall this winter.
Wife and I plus another couple sailed out of Two Harbors on the morning of July 4 some years ago. It was 70 degrees at the ore dock. Barely 40 out on the Big Lake.

I remember plenty of summer mornings in the forest between Bemidji and Park Rapids. We’d drive into Park Rapids for the sunshine and extra 25 degrees.
Duluth and the North Shore were my old stomping grounds.
The water in the lake was probably barely above freezing. I think its median annual temperature is around 38 degrees. And it seldom gets above 40.
I don’t know how much of this global warming we can take.
Yeah, sort of like Saskatoon on the May 24 weekend. Bring a parka.
Some years back, the wife and I stayed at a hotel in Superior, Wisconsin in late May. When we left that morning to head back home in a southerly direction, it was below freezing. Later that day when we got back to our home about 250 miles south it was almost 80 degrees. Every time we travel in that area in May, we freeze. Lake Superior is like one gigantic refrigerator.
I remember the summer of ‘63 when on a trip to Michigan and back, our family stopped by the shores of the lake. My older brother and I waded out quite a distance. It was August, and the water close to the shore was not too bad. We must have caught it at the peak high water temperature.

I drove into town in the midst of a sleet storm...on the afternoon of July 4, 1961.
I had a boss who used to sail up around the Apostles during the summer. He said that every year someone unfamiliar with the lake would anchor out in the deeps and jump in for a quick swim ... then just as quicly jump right back out!
He said it also wasn’t unusual for them to suffer heart attacks from the shock and drown. Said he watched it happen once and even aided in the search for the body.
The Big Lake doesn’t forgive.
Close to shore, the water can be tolerable. We’ve taken the kids swimming at Sandy Point. But they don’t go out very far and they don’t stay in long.

Things in the Antarctic are getting very interesting
In 2007, after 7 years trending downward, the IPCC in their report predicted the sea ice around Antarctica will continue to decline and the decline may soon accelerate
After the 2007 report right on queue, in 2008 the sea ice did the opposite and after it's minimum in February went on explosive growth reaching record highs for the time of year.
This year, the sea ice growth has been similar and has been matching 2008 as the record highest sea ice amount for the time of year.
However, in mid-April 2008, the sea ice growth mysteriously paused for a few weeks and fell back to near normal levels.
What's interesting to watch now, is so far 2014 hasn't experienced a pause like 2008 and is at record highs ( at a whopping 29% above normal) and still rapidly growing. If the sea ice continues to rapidly grow, when the sea ice reaches it's maximum in August/September it's not only going to break the record, it's going to shatter it big time.
