CHELYABINSK, April 26 (Itar-Tass) - Electricity was cut off to more than 150 residential localities in the Chelyabinsk region hit by a heavy snowstorm on Friday. Electro-transmission lines were covered with snow and torn by strong winds.

Electricity supply was resumed to most of the houses overnight, but 13 residential localities of 9,369 people had no electricity on Saturday morning, the Russian Emergencies Ministry's Chelyabinsk regional department reported. Repairs were planned to be completed at 16:00 Moscow time.

Mass cultural events and school classes were cancelled in Chelyabinsk on Saturday, and all services in the city remained on alert because of the severe weather. Emergency services organized work to clear roads of snow and help drivers. Hospitals were ready to receive affected people.

The Emergencies Ministry reported that the bad weather with heavy snow and winds of 20-25 m/sec would remain in the region on Saturday.

Someone needs to call Al Gore! We're told "climate change" is responsible for heating up the planet.

A month into spring, Russia is coping with heavy snow and fierce winds. Our planet appears to be cooling! But we're told we're climate change deniers.

Go figure.

Yep, I’m 150 miles north from Chelyabinsk and it is awful right now. Yesterday it was worse, airport, highways were closed. City is now in a process of cleaning the snow, driving around is a mess too. I don’t remember a thing like that at that time of the year here.

Wow! You are 150 miles NORTH of Chelyabinsk ?? You are way out there truly in Siberia

I was in Yalta some time ago a chatting with a guy from Chelyabinsk who was taking the train back. I asked how long a ride thinking in hours. He said 7 days only stopping to change crews and engines. Tough trip

In fact it is in Urals, a mountain chain separating European Russia and Siberia. Western Siberia is further East. Chelyabinsk is in the southern part of the chain or on the edge of Central Asian plains with their steppes and deserts. It is usually a rather warm place for a region to the point that a camel is their ‘national animal’ and makes a city emblem.

Must be a really slow train. It takes three days by car normally, given you are driving alone or at daytime only (or at least it took before they have installed speedcams all around Russia) and haven’t been caught in a jam somewhere.
Might be a tricky trip now though.
