"Bomb shelters were a common site..."

I read no further.

Any reporter who doesn't know the difference between "site" and "sight" should be horsewhipped out of whatever venue they scrawl for.

Henrich, of New Jersey, paid to reserve space in an underground luxury bunker for himself, his wife, and their three kids.

...Bart, Lisa and little Maggie

If you’re going to build one, the bulk of the costs is just building it. Anything you have added to it usually only adds a fraction to the initial expense.

Having said that, building a pool seems a bit much because, unless you plan on storing the amount of water to refill this pool several times, you will run out of water relatively quickly and then it just becomes a pit and possibly a dangerous one at that.

But I think a movie theatre is a good idea if you have a large library at the time you have to enter your bunker.

How much gas does he have stored to keep this Shangra-La running? My guess is somewhere between 2-3 weeks worth. After the gas runs out, it’s just an expensive tomb.

Of course, that is 2-3 weeks for the herd above to thin out. Assuming he even makes it there and is able to keep it.

A few questions:

Are you going to spend your life within a few feet of the entrance so you can dive in at the first hint of danger, like Mr. Groundhog?

How do you run an indoor movie, pool, other luxury items, without electricity?

Oh yes a generator.

And how do you run a generator without fuel? If you can get fuel as needed, it is not such a catastrophic event that you need to hide in a hole.

So much for that.

I was reading an article recently that rich Brits are adding to their land by digging underneath their houses to build extra rooms and floors.

I know a guy that has a family farm in Peru who keeps a couple of ten thousand gallon tanks of diesel stored underground. He keeps rotating the fuel so he’s not at risk of it going stale, but he figures the world is probably going to go to the shiatz and wants to ensure that he is able to function for as long as possible.

I did. Also read “One Second After”.

I think prepping might give you a headstart, but in 2-4 weeks, you’ll be as hosed as everyone else. Those with flashy shelters will be targets, initially. After a while, desperate gangs will start targeting ANY house where there might be supplies. Trusted neighbors banding together for common defense will have the best chance.

a large library ...

Shelter should be well stocked with Montesquieu/Locke/DeToqueville/Madison/Jefferson/etc for reading and study while underground, and then applied when returning above ground. A great number of lessons learned to bear in mind to improve and/or not repeat mistakes.

Prepping will probably keep you alive and well enough to handle just about any problem for a long enough time for society to generally recover from most things that could happen to it.

However, if we are so up the creek that there is no recovery for years on end, there isn’t enough prepping anybody, but the most elite, could do and thrive.

Henrich, of New Jersey, paid to reserve space in an underground luxury bunker for himself, his wife, and their three kids.

The cost was $50,000 per adult and $35,000 for children under the age of 16....

Pretty pricey timeshare.
