“Happy slapping” has been going on in England for years. There, it’s largely at the hand of white yobs and chavs. In a sense it’s the same group of people, wards of the state, whose actions are divorced from any consequence. They don’t do productive work, there is no shaming mechanism, no potential loss of income or reputation, and so they become hostile to the productive element, then begin amusing themselves by assaulting them.

In the early 80’s, my mom would drive a group of us around toward evening time on the weekends. We’d throw water balloons at people walking down the street. Then, sometimes, we’d go home, get a different car, and go back, doing the same thing.
I always thought it was funny, until I got older, and realized these folks were just walking somewhere, home from work, or maybe TO work, and got doused with a water balloon. Makes me sad to say I participated in it.
