As a matter of fact they may not pack a gun, but most carry dog mace.

Since cops routinaly shoot pets and dogs, why are not all cops required to carry mace?

BTW, mace etc will not kill some innocent neighborhood kid 5 houses away.

Good a reasonable question.

When an aggressive dog is “maced,” you only have one chance to get to safety. The dog mace is only a distraction that allow YOU a chance to retreat.
