At The NRA Meeting: Come For The Guns, Stay For The Camaraderie [BARF ALERT]

Ben Pickering can't believe his luck.

"Holy cow," he keeps saying. "Man, that's just incredible. That's just amazing."

Pickering won a drawing for an Ambush rifle, an $1,800 AR-15-style model. Pickering already has a lot of weapons — "I honestly could not count," he says — but he's still excited to be given this new one.

Pickering loves guns, but he's also happy that the National Rifle Association's annual meeting, being held this weekend in Indianapolis, has given him the chance to meet up with family members who live in other states.

The same sort of thing is true for a lot of people. There's plenty of talk about politics and gun laws, with Republican politicians such as Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal addressing the crowd on Friday.

But for many among the 70,000 in attendance, meeting up with family, friends and like-minded people is more important than talking about this year's elections. It's also a chance for enthusiasts to check out all the latest in guns, custom barrels and binoculars.

I’m wondering how the NRA is going to prevent Bloomberg from infiltrating them.

Rising Voice of Gun Ownership Is Female

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/11/us/rising-voice-of-gun-ownership-is-female.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0

In the debate over firearms regulations, the voices of gun owners have largely been those of men. But at firing ranges across the country, a growing number of women are learning to use firearms and honing their skills.

Women’s participation in shooting sports has surged over the last decade, increasing by 51.5 percent for target shooting from 2001 to 2011, to just over 5 million women, and by 41.8 percent for hunting, according to the National Sporting Goods Association.

Gun sales to women have risen in concert. In a survey last year by the National Shooting Sports Foundation, 73 percent of gun dealers said the number of female customers had gone up in 2011, as had a majority of retailers surveyed in the two previous years.

..............

It is difficult to pinpoint how many gun owners in the United States are women — the federal government does not break down background checks by demographic, and most manufacturers do not release information on sales. But Peggy Tartaro, the editor of Women and Guns magazine, a nonprofit publication of the Second Amendment Foundation, said she had found estimates varying from 12 million to 17 million.

They cross the political spectrum. Professor Stange, who hunts regularly and owns several rifles and shotguns, describes herself as a liberal Democrat.

Most people — including Pickering — aren't actually going to walk away from the show with new weapons in hand, due to federal licensing requirements.

Can someone help clarify this statement for me? What are these "federal licensing requirements"?

I went to the NRA convention some years ago and while they had lots of firearms on display, no one was selling them at the convention. Other stuff like hunting gear was was for sale though.

I’ve been to several NRA conventions and the Shot Show. The exhibitors and attendees are some of the nicest people I’ve ever met. If you love America and its core values, you will be very comfortable at these events.

Calling Ben Pickering’s prize “an amped-up hunting rifle on steroids.” Heh.
Every generation returning from war wanted guns like they carried: first, flintlock muskets, then percussion; followed by lever actions; then WWI Mauser bolt-action; WWII Garand-style semis, and now ARs.
1. So, they’re admitting our point that these are hunting rifles (sure they are); and, 2. They’re just JEALOUS of old Ben!; and, finally, 3. We can choose to give to the NRA, unlike subsidised NPR (National Puerile Radio) which reaches into our pockets, like it or not.

Russia has very restrictive gun laws and several times our murder rate. (Not counting Chicago, which has very .... )

Over 1300 comments now (2354 CDT) and some patriots are standing toe-to-toe with the usual NPR crowd, giving just as good as they get. If it weren’t so late, it might be fun to jump in there.

At the rate the liberals gun banning efforts are going, soon you won’t be able to walk down the sidewalk without tripping over a firearm. Their fail, thus far, is beyond epic and make no mistake liberals, we are going to ensure that it will be impossible for you to ever come anywhere near disarming this country. You have gifted us with a number of curses. Well make no mistake liberals, this will be our gift to you and to your descendents.

It would be like bludgeoning a litter of little bunnies trapped in a box. They don't have the mental capacity to understand anything beyond those twisted feelings they've been having ever since they drank that damned DemKoolAid.
