Arrested for quoting Winston Churchill: (EU)

A candidate in the European elections was arrested on suspicion of racial harrassment after quoting a passage about Islam, written by Winston Churchill, during a campaign speech.

Paul Weston, chairman of the party Liberty GB, made the address on the steps of Winchester Guildhall, in Hampshire on Saturday.

A member of the public took offence at the quote, taken from Churchill's The River War and called police.

The passage from the book, written by the wartime Prime Minister and first published in 1899, focuses on Churchill's observations about Islam while serving during the Anglo-Egyptian reconquest of the Sudan.

Mr Weston told his audience: 'Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live.

'Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers of the faith: all know how to die but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it.

'No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith.'

Police officers arrested Mr Weston, mid-speech, for failing to comply with their request to move on under the powers of a dispersal order made against him.

He was further arrested on suspicion of religious or racial harrassment.

LOL, what an absurd world we live in.

Sadly, you’re making too much sense on this with regard to today’s society.

By killing Creedy? Or are you going deeper into the ideology?

The film is like onions. They have layers...

But then, not everybody likes onions...they do, however, like parfaits!

The River War.......... The fact that I got that book and The History of the English Peoples volumes for less than shipping costs with a "DESTROY" stamp on the inside of each cover tells you all you need to know about the educational situation these days.

Unbelievable!!

The rest of the paragraph...

It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science, the science against which it had vainly struggled, the civilisation of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilisation of ancient Rome.”
Winston Churchill, The River War

The post was made in jest.

Thank you for the full quote which is far more damning than my cheap barb.

If you wish to determine the true oppressed minority, see who is not free to criticize.

His views are a strange amalgam of racial purity, support for homosexual marriage and libertarianism.

I'm afraid I don't see anything necessarily incongruous about this combination of view.

Why can't someone believe in racialism and simultaneously in libertarianism?

It has already spread throughout Central Africa

It should be pointed out that Christianity is spreading faster in Africa at the moment than Islam.

Thanks for that. I had figured there had to be some editing as Churchill’s writing could be super-detailed which some editors find cumbersome. Considering Churchill was promptly voted out after the war and the present state of England, I am sure most folks over there didn’t want anything to do with the truth in east Africa back in the day let alone Winnie’s opinion!!

In The River War WC said some very harsh things about Kitchener, who was in charge of the British forces in Sudan, and about the British policy there. In particular he poked large holes in the British propaganda claim that they were "rescuing" the poor Sudanese from the oppression of the khalifa. Quite similar to the claim that Iraqis would welcom us when we invaded, though probably with even less justification. Pointing this out wasn't popular among the British military and political elite.

During WWII WC was the head of the Navy and Kitchener was the head of the Army. His previous criticisms obviously created some stresses. :)

As pointless and ridiculous as this arrest is, he’s been arrested for refusing to move on when asked. Rather than the quote, but the latter makes a better headline.
