WASHINGTON (AP) The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is launching ads this week in North Carolina and Georgia in a crunch-time effort to help establishment-backed Republicans in crowded Senate primaries. It is also pumping money into commercials praising GOP hopefuls in Michigan, Montana and Alaska.
The powerful business organization's ad buy is a clear attempt to tip the balance in Republican contests and help the GOP nominate viable general election candidates. In 2010 and 2012, tea party and far-right conservatives cost the GOP seats in Nevada, Delaware, Colorado, Indiana and Missouri and shots at Senate control, a fate Republicans are determined to avoid this November.
"We will aggressively support those candidates who plan to campaign on a free enterprise and growth agenda, have the courage to govern and the ability to win," said Rob Engstrom, national political director for the Chamber.
The GOP needs to gain six seats to seize the majority in the Senate, and emboldened Republicans, pointing to President Barack Obama's unpopularity, are bullish about their chances.
The North Carolina primary is next Tuesday, Georgia two weeks later. The Chamber will begin airing ads Wednesday for North Carolina House Speaker Thom Tillis and Georgia Rep. Jack Kingston.

Translation: CRUSH CONSERVATIVES
If only the DC powers put half as much effort to defeat the other party.
I am researching third parties for November.
Once again, rewriting history. No mention of the DC party costing us Alaska in 2010, and lackluster efforts by their chosen candidates in FL, WI, VA, ND, NM and on down the list. No mention that they back now-Democrat Charlie Crist over a much superior candidate. No mention that the majority of tea party support in MO last cycle was not for Akin. That was the Huckabee wing that lost that seat. Our record is much better than there's and we are sending superior people to Washington when we win, instead of bought and paid for Senators owned by big business.
keep it up and we will have another six years of democrats running the senate
It's better to look your enemy in the eye than to be continually stabbed in the back by your 'friends'.
Cool. You have the party talking points down. I've shown up for every election and made donations to the party and to candidates. I have very little to show for it. This party as it exists is what led to the Democrat majority in the Senate. When the party itself abandons conservative candidates in Alaska and Indiana in the Senate and great people like Cuccinelli in Virginia, they are the ones taking steps backwards.
We have a clear path to a strong November, and the idiot class in Washington is taking backward steps on Obamacare and injecting amnesty in the discussion to cause more fracture within the party and latino voters. These idiots have ran two lackluster presidential campaigns against a pretty easy target and have been simply horrific in their Senate campaigns the last two cycles, letting damaged incumbents off the ropes in states after state. These people pick unattractive candidates like Charlie Crist and Dewhurst over superior conservative candidates time and again.
I have one foot out the door and the other will follow if they pursue immigration this year. This party is worse off than the Whigs in the 1850s before a new party formed. They are incompetent in campaigns and in governing and for over a decade now have existing solely to do the bidding of major interests. 2012 showed a complete failure of their consultant community who pocketed hundreds of millions while under-performing. Those people have been further empowered and rewarded since, while the party has gone on full attack mode against the individuals and groups who have been winning elections on our side of the aisle.
Frankly, to your charge, what difference does it make?
With Democrats in charge, we go over the cliff with the pedal to the metal.
With GOPe in charge, we go over the cliff in second gear and the tachometer in the red.
Either way, the ending is bad...
