A FEW thoughts on the Donald Sterling scandal....
....My sympathy for Sterling is nonexistent. His racist remarks are odious, and they couldn’t have come as a shock to anyone who has followed his career. Yet the most alarming part of this story has less to do with basketball or the racial prejudices of an 80-year-old plutocrat than with what it says about the rapidly disappearing presumption that things we say in our personal lives will stay personal.

I just listened to the conversation to see what all the hoopla was about. I was expecting vile and degrading remarks about blacks, after hearing what the punishment was for this guy.
Unless I was listening to something else, I thought the old man was more concerned about the image it created when his way-too-young “girlfriend” was cavorting with very fit, physical younger-than-him black men.
Let’s be blunt - I am over sixty and when I was growing up, when you saw a white woman with a black man, the rumor was (at least back then) that she was in it because the sex was better. Sorry, but that’s what was said.
Unless he has other issues in his past as being racist, he didn’t seem to personally have any hate for blacks, at least by what I listened to.
In any case, it was a private conversation, or so he thought. He really didn’t sound that hateful. Just old, tired, and not politically correct.

He and his girlfriend were having an argument. She wanted to have it both ways, his money and her boyfriends on the side. How would you feel? His girlfriend set him up and he was dumb enough to fall in the trap.
I’ve run into that on other message boards and social media sites too. Too many people have be raised under the umbrella of freedom and have no experience with the horrors of Fascism and communism. They never saw the movies of people being shot in the back escaping East Germany, getting hooked out of the water off the shores of Cuba only to have their dead bodies pushed back in. They have no idea because those that lived through it and those that fought against it are dying off and never really want to relive the hell by recounting it for the history books. To them Cuba isn’t all that bad, NoKo’s Kim is just a funny looking guy that likes to boss people around, watch basketball and has strange haircut.
He explicitly had no problems with her seeing other men, so long as it was private. He didn’t like her associating with these oversexed studs, likely because he felt that humiliated him.
Hiding behind a screen name won't help you much either. At some point, our screen names will be mapped to our real names. Bank on it. For our web surfing activity is creating a "digital signature" that will be unique to each one of us and from that database, our real identities will be known.
Couple that with the growing number of surveillance cameras and other such technology. Eventually, all our public activity will be recorded and searchable as we will be able to go nowhere public without being recorded.
The Clipper players are in for a rude surprise if Sterling doesn’t sell and it ends up for years in litigation, as they will be hurt the most out of this fiasco. Monetarily, and draft-wise. I’m sure most of them aren’t eager to have to move somewhere else and I’m sure most of them don’t want to have to sell their homes. Instead of warm LA, they might end up in cold Chicago, lol.
Plus their salaries somewhere else might be less than what they are being paid now. Plus their wives, if married, aren’t going to like being uprooted, kids having to change schools and lose their friends. All this will happen if the NBA decides to try to punish Sterling by making the players free agents, free to leave for other teams, or making the Sterling franchise lose money and AD sponsors.
Then there is the NAACP. Donald Sterling gave lots of money to the NAACP. He won’t be doing that anymore, IMO. So they will lose lots of bucks from Sterling’s contributions. If Sterling ever did decide to sell the team, he’d make a huge profit, huge. So the only losers here will be the players, their families, and the NAACP. Sometimes the devil you know is better than the devil you don’t know.

TOTALLY CORRECT.
I see this less as ‘disciplinary action’ than as the economic decision of the other owners. They are in the business of selling a non-essential good. Their entire business model is built on people having positive associations with their brand. They are dependent on people buying tickets, and on companies creating a myriad of cross-endorsement deals for everything from beer to shoes.
There are many worse ‘crimes’ than what Stirling, but it’s hard to conceive of anything Stirling could have said or done that did more harm to their business model. The value of the San Diego Clippers, in Stirling’s hands, is now zero. He will get several hundred million dollars for selling the franchise because it is worth that much in the hands of another owner. But the other owners, through the commissioner are telling him he has to sell because he is damaging the value of their franchises as well.
This isn’t a judicial proceeding. The NBA is a voluntary economic parternship among the franchise owners. He knew that when he decided to buy a franchise. And what he said, though said in private and not illegal, damaged the value of the other owner’s franchises and they acted accordingly.

Yes. I believe Americans of all races are going to conclude that our first amendment rights are more important than the political correctness being used against an obviously immoral, in my view, old man, who is probably experiencing some form of dementia. The girlfriend should go to jail, whether or not she was part of a plot to steal his team from him, as was suggested yesterday on Rush. This kind of political intrigue is dangerous for all of us..Do not let this happen, people. If this man is no longer capable of running his business, then his family should make the decisions. His property should not be confiscated from him because of his psychology or his speech. Anything else means that no one is safe under a now despotic system which is unconstitutional.
