The NBA’s lifetime ban of Donald Sterling for his offensive comments should put the NFL on notice about Washington Redskins’ racist name, Harry Reid says.
On the Senate floor Wednesday afternoon, Reid commended NBA commissioner Adam Silver for his response to the Sterling situation, and urged his NFL counterpart Roger Goodell to take similar action to “stamp out bigotry in its ranks.” The Senate majority leader also dismissed the tradition-based defense Redskins owner Dan Snyder has made of the team’s name when pledging to stick by it, pointing out that the Washington Wizards changing their name from the Washington Bullets in the 1990s.
“Since Snyder fails to show any leadership, the National Football League should take an assist from the NBA and pick up the slack — it would be a slam dunk,” Redi said. “I believe Roger Goodell is a good man, but it’s time for this good man to act: Remove this hateful term from your league’s vocabulary.”
Reid’s demands echo that of Oneida Nation, the leading group behind the Redskins name-change, who says that the “NBA has shown leagues like the NFL that they have a moral responsibility” to “not be a platform to promote bigotry.”
