Years ago I saw a comedian joke about how artists were not personally recognizable, for the most part. He said, “If I asked you what Henry Moore looked like, you wouldn’t have a clue. But If I brought a man on stage, and the man had an enormous hole through his midsection, you’d turn to your chum and say, ‘Look! That must be Henry Moore!’”

I can recognize a Remington, Russell, Gerald Curtis Delano and Gil Elvgrin painting a half a mile a way!

some of those are really funny! my favorites--Van Gogh and Renoir were not mentioned... when i see horses as well as ballerinas, i recognize Degas...

during the elementary years of our homeschool lives (i call it "the Garden" period) i used the Dover Publications postcards to teach my boys art appreciation...

I can recognize a Remington, Russell, Gerald Curtis Delano and Gil Elvgrin painting a half a mile a way!

I see Remington's work in some museums but he isn't as celebrated as the modernists and post-modernists who deliberately created "anti-art".

Elvgrin and other "American illustrators" are not accepted into the canon of "good art".
